i firmly believe there is a genetic component to psychological pathology but it all boils down to genetic predispositions manifesting themselves as problems using specific cofactors properly... like b2, b3 and b6 are the most common and can be accurately identified through genetic testing now... when this happens you place the individuals on methylated forms of the cofactors and the problem clears up in days sometimes... then there are underlying health issues that standard tests completely miss... like food allergies for instance... instead of running a standard IgE test progressive/integrative MD's are running IgG or other tests to check for hyper or delayed reactions in stead of immediate responses...

i know what i'm talking about, trust me... i'm very experienced... i'm describing my own experience... this is why i'm so deeply interested in somatics instead of pursuing my pretty successful career in engineering. this impacted my life so deeply i really can't express it into words...

Cooooool... a new twist on cognitive behavioral therapy? well i have an extremely poor opinion of CBT... CBT is pathetic in my opinion as many others. 7 years, 5 psychologists who all practiced CBT and nothing and 3 months with a somatic psychologist and my life turned around 180... somatics applies subconscious reprogramming... now commonly called neuroplasticity meditation... :shrug:

I'm glad to hear you found somatics. Sounds like it really helped you. :smile:

I am a really into (transcendental) meditation. It has helped me so much and it is so simple. Also spending time in a sensory deprivation tank is incredible. It's is expensive (like $40 an hour at the cheapest) but it is magical. I would love to own one some day.

It sounds like you could really do some good in the world by getting into somatics. I mean, you just turned me on to it, and I am trying to read up on it. Really interesting stuff. That might be an answer for a lot of people. It was for you. You should try to take it into the mainstream, if you end up taking the psych career path.

What do are your thoughts on (mechanical) engineering? I keep hearing thats one of the best degrees to get, but is it insanely difficult? I am more of a reading, writing type, so I would really need to brush up my science/math side.

I might go for something like neuroloy down the road. Those scientific medical jobs are where it's at. I would really need to apply myself to improve my math and science skills. I know I could do it though.

I'm doing Biomedical Science in college and I love it, I can enjoy studying it and know that there's always going to be demand for the job.

Nice! It's great to hear people studying while actually enjoying the material. Thats what I try to do: go to class with an enthusiastic attitude and an open mind. It's not always easy, though. The subject matter can be really intimidating sometimes. How do you suggest I brush up my science and math skills?

Also do you feel like the occasional use psychedelic substances could help increase my potential(at least psychologically)? I'm talking about judicious psilocybin use. I'm pretty new to psychedelics.

Perhaps you should have someone you trust, check that paranoid ideation. Of course, if you have paranoid ideation, you won't be able to trust anyone. I distract to induce a trance, and then the trance condition allows certain types of healing to take place. I'm in my second year as a psych major, and I'm particularly interested in social psychology and the ways each individual approaches social interactions. I feel like I've learned more about everything I have wanted to learn about through my studies in psych moreso than any other area, and I'm not even that far yet! :O. But yeah...that's awesome that you are passionate and whatnot :laugh:

Mindfulness is part of Buddhism, because Buddhism teaches you to be aware of everything inside and out, so I disagree with that statement.

i've taken 3 different psychology classes in college so far, and so far it is the most interesting/entertaining subject of study to me..

but um, what i really want to venture into is more neurosciency stuff and behavioral/motivational psychoscience, cognitive neruoscience/neurophysics/ cognitive psychology

and other fancy cool sounding words like that i discovered on wikipedia

Thanks a bunch for posting that, I only had enough time to read the first couple of pages right now, but I've saved the pdf and I will definitely read through more of it this evening. It looks like it will be questioning some of the things I've learned about psychotherapy so far.

of course Buddhism teaches us to be aware... i grew up in a Buddhist home, i was basically adopted at 16 by my friends parents and grew up in it. it was never pushed on me though witch was cool... but isn't it interesting that the Buddhist attempts to want to empty the mind while meditating where in mindfulness it's quite the opposite. there is a meditative practice called "choiceless awareness" which is where the individual attempts to experience without thought... pretty deep to be honest and not something i'm able to do... it's basically done by advanced individuals... i actually learned about it here but it was being presented as a form of Buddhist meditation but when i checked it out i was stunned to discover it was actually a mindfulness practice... go figure... :shrug:

But by making the mind empty of your random thoughts you are filling your mind with awareness of how you are connected with everything, so really you are displacing muddy water and filling it with glacier water. Your mind being the vessel and the water being your awareness.

That is how I see it at least.
