Any Future Psych Majors on here?

I think psychology is where it's at for me. I'm willing to go to go all the way to graduate school because I am deeply fascinated with the human mind and consciousness. I also love helping people. Making them smile. It makes me feel good.

Is anyone else headed towards a future in psych? Maybe your farther along than I am. I'm still planning my transfer to a UC school from CC.

Share your thoughts, advice, suggestions, and opinions on psychology as a career.

I am no psychologist, but I wholeheartedly believe that if you can understand why you do the things you do, it makes reading others intentions much easier. Good Luck, helping people is a smart thing.

I'm majoring in Psych.. But I dont want to become a "psychologist" - it's a little invention as you say; and this invention happens to be taken rather extremely by some most folk who go into it.

But I do havta mention, I quoted you because what you say is deep and revealing...

It was something I was considering when I was choosing my college earlier this year, but I ended up not picking it due to the (honestly) bleak career prospects.
But if it is the only thing you can imagine doing, it's worth going for it - the best people in the field will be the ones who get the jobs (or so I'd hope!)
A lot of people I know chose it because they thought it'd be simple and they'd breeze through college barely having to study at all! Well they regret that now! :tongue:

I gave it up and went for engineering. I think I am, by any meaning of the word, quite insane. hahaha. But then I think the chicks in the psych clinic I went to once in town were pretty crazy.

Oh yeah? I get what your saying. I got some time to figure it all out too. Would you say engineering is a good choice for hippies like us? I hear thats where all the jobs are at. Psych is fascinating, but its.. mehhh who knows?

i have a masters in mechanical engineering but if things work out the way i hope they do i do plan om becoming a somatic psychologist... somatics literally saved my life... 7 years of CBT with 5 psychologists who were trying to bend me over backwards and in three months with a psychologist who practiced somatics i was literally on my way to recovery... deep shit man... they look at the mind/body... body/mind connection well beyond the boundaries then any new age guruuuu ever will...

this is one form of somatic psychology.... Peter A. Levine is considered one of the pioneers in the somatic experience...

yeah, ya definitely gotta have a plan for psychology.. most of my friends are wishing (quite high) to get into clinical... in the UK it's more difficult than med school to get into.

Im pretty much set, starting my masters this sept - while my final year is running too, the masters is a 3 year course ran by the institute of mental health in a highly specific topic area based on the capabilities framework.  I wanna finally do group analysis, follow in Foulkes, Bion, Bridger, Main steps..

Ive said it once here before and I'll say it again, most people who go into psychology are quickly disappointed to find out its not what they thought - if they wanna help people they should have stuck to counselling or volunteer work, Im doing it for "core training" - usually nursing (medical) or mental health, med degree or psych will suffice for most post grad careers in this field.

CAT therapy works just as well... and it uses Buddhist techniques such as mindfulness.  Its a treatment for dissociated states.. No, I didnt say multiples personalities :nono:

I was going for psychology, but got more interested in neurology. Not in school right now, but I'm going back in the fall. I have all my pre requisites done, plenty of sociology and psychology classes out of the way, now it's time for some science focused classes. I'm getting into a vet tech assistant program to get my associates finished up, which gives me a solid background in bio medical science, and a solid job while I go to school for neurology.

That's the long term goal anyway.

Psychologists these days love the genetic causes of behaviour, its more scientifically evidenced and not some scheming 5% significant point for statisticians to bend results with.  One of my friends is loving biomedical sciences.

mindfulness is at the very core of somatic's... :shrug: cat therapy huh? i'll look into it and give you a thumbs up or thumbs down when i see what it's foundation is... Buddhism is an interesting approach to psychology but Buddhism and mindfulness conflict with each other on so many levels... in Buddhism they teach to empty the mind but with mindfulness you fully integrate the entire experience into the moment... how are these two compatible? mindfulness is not a Buddhist concept when you really think about it but this is just my opinion... and i'm well aware of what dissociation is having lived with depersonalization and derealization for years... lived with... as in the past... thank you somatic psychology!!! but i'll look into cat... :lol:
