 I only know I know nothing, I have browsed a little the Maitake & Morels pdf, and I'm still more messed I'm not sure if it's for my english poor level. But there say: "stem elongation and cap development of the fungal sporocarp are affected by light" so you will not be misguided.

I just found a link to collect valuable information:

Well, this is the other block. Now waiting for primordia.

Hey Toni,

I now have about eight Maitake blocks that are at varying levels of
colonization, and in searching for relevant threads, to study techniques
for fruiting, I recalled this thread.

Did you have any more luck with this last block?

There seem to be several issues that apply.  One is that these do not
need the humidity that other species need, Nameko for example.

I suppose that I will be trying the approach of taping the sack down
while exposing just the brains.  I am thinking that a healthy layer
of casing soil is something that I should try with some portion of
my blocks.

It is becoming warmer and so I will likely cold shock my blocks
to help stimulate pinning.  I am also going to keep making blocks
so that I will have some ready to fruit in the fall.

I will post results if I find anything worth showing.

Take care,

JD

Good timing JD; i have 3 maitake blocks that just started pinning.  I really dont know much about growing these at all.  I was worried about not having low enough temps; can it fruit in 70-80F(my current temps)?  Most things i read say 60's is necessary.

I think i will try exposing just the brains through X in the bag as well; i run a pretty low humidity in my FC so i generally try to keep the blocks in the plastic to retains substrate moisture content.

What strain you got JD? I got mine from EM666 a while back.

No JD, I was waiting for primordia near month and a half and then appeared some spots of trich. I buried that block in my backyard and the birds dug up and destroyed it. The truth is that I ended up really pissed off with this specie.

Toni,

I am sorry to hear that.  Do not be ashamed, as we all have our Nemeses.

Jalisco is an angry little bitch, and she hates me.  Grrrrr!

I will get her to fruit, but will have to wait for better genetics to try again.

I am reading the Australian PDF and am going to try a few of the techniques
that I read in your excellent thread.  (I checked here and found a few
threads the shared successful fruiting, but not many that discussed
concrete methods for fruiting)

Aleon, I am not recalling where I got my genetics from...I actually
have two different samples from two different people right now.

I am going to case at least one of my blocks too.

This is just getting started.

Take care,

JD

From the Australian paper:

Quote:
Spawn run should be in
the dark, at 23-25 ºC with relative humidity no greater than 70 %. Colonised bags should be left in this
environment until the mycelial mat has formed and then moved to the fruiting room with no light,
temperature of not more than 16 ºC, and relative humidity of 85 %. Light should be gradually
increased as the fruit body develops. At the same time relative humidity should be progressively
increased to 95 %. The bag should not be opened until petals are forming on the fruit body and
adequate moisture for fruit body formation should be maintained.

This paper makes strong statements regarding light.

Thus far my blocks are developing in different light levels.

I have to squirrel my blocks away wherever I can...and where wifey
will not bitch too much (sorry babe, but true is true) and some
have providentially been growing in low light levels.  So, I might see
some differences to comment on.

Onward and upward,

JD

I am just starting out with maitake. I have LC and inoculated some grain spawn, but is slow growing and I hear that after the jars are colonized it has to sit in a dormant period for 30 days before shocking and fruiting. Have you guys had any experience with these procedures and what are your suggestions for moving to bulk substrate I started some maitake on WBS bcs that's what I had, but I plan on doing a wood loving substrate in bags this weekend. Does anyone know if I can transfer WBS to bulk spawn or to my wood chips / sawdust bag?...Thanks...

Well Matty, you do have a fair amount of reading and trying to do,
but let me add what I can...

Honestly, this makes no sense...when you refer to "jars" I assume
that we are still talking about grain spawn....and there is no
shocking required by grain spawn.

Now, sometimes we refer to a consolidation period, but this is for
*substrates*, for some species, and not for grain spawn.

You can use any wood based sub.  I have used straw, but recommend sawdust.

Good luck,

JD

Right, I mis-typed. I plan on doing two types of inoculating. I have maitake growing slowly on WBS which I plan on transfering to a bulk sawdust sub and I also plan on injecting a bag of sawdust sub from straight LC. Once the sawdust/wood chip/gypsum/sucrose sub is completely colonized will it sit dormant for 30 days before I see my grey dots that turn into brains or will it just happen after full colonization and at what point if any should I shock in the fridge and for how long? Sorry to ask so many questions, I have read so much and there seems to be a lot of contradicting / unclear info out there on the web. Thank you for any info...

I did not use a cold shock for this species, but YMMV.

I also waited longer than 30 days to see pins too.

Good luck,

JD

I wouldn't recommend using the LC straight to sawdust.  There really is not enough myc there to give it a fair shot on the sawdust.

I was thinking it took me about 90 days to see primordia.  That's just off the top of my head.

So I should do LC to grain and then colonized grain to a sawdust bulk sub?

Yeah, I gotta feelin'

G frondosa is not shy on grains.

In fact, it ate everything.

Getting it to fruit is the "fun" part.  :0)

Good luck,
