Brainless Maitake?

Hello,

about a week ago, I was given a colonized bag with maitake, where I already found things on the top, which I thought were early stages of primordia. I did not open the bag, instead I waited for those gray, brain like blobs to appear to later cut holes for them.

Now on all of those things there is a while porous layer, looking like it's going to produce spores without forming fruitbodies.


Any advice for a maitake-newbie?

Hard to see. Looks like the normal primordia , besides they are white from lack of light.

It is very difficult to make a good picture. This is a closeupfrom one of the 'primordia':

It does get a lot of light, but no direct sunlight.

Looks different or maybe just the pic. Is that like a honey comb or is the surface solid? The primordia on mine were brain mounds with slight pits that would fill with black liquid for the first 5-7 days. They would turn white/grey with low light like yours. They need light 24/7 to keep the dark coloring

Yes, it looks like a honeycomb. I would have expected to see that when looking under a mature fruitbody. Just checked the block and noticed new cream colored lumps forming at the sides. Those ones have a solid surface but no pits yet. Hopefully they do better.

ive had the same thing before, let it grow for months and months and months, infact i still have the bags and they look pretty much the same lol...been over a year now.  i never opened it because i was never 100% sure wth it was.

then i got a different culture and boom grey mounds lol...




the really odd part is that the last time i looked at these bags they had those leaflets...but then they had also started to form icecicles or spikes like lions mane as well....really weird stuff


im not sure what it is but it doesn't look appealing at all


oh and here's the pic of the grey mounds from a different culture, and oddly enough their were those white mounds...but honestly it looks more like a parasite or something coliving with maitake than anything

i guess they say maitake can have different forms like this but honestly the weird white form just doesn't do it for me:shrug:

Good that you chimed in, now I remember your maitake thread, where I thought you were growing sparassis crispa. Indeed, your stuff looks exactly like a larger version of mine. Until now I thought of wrong conditions or a mutation, but some fungal contam or parasite is also possible. Damned, I was about to take a few samples from this block to start new cultures. Looks like a bad idea now.

It took quite a while, but I think the riddle is solved. The problem must have been too much light.

About a month after my last post it got green mold and gnats, so I removed the bag, all the odd growth and the contaminated top layer. The rest of the block went into a bucket, embedded in old, used potting soil and covered by some leaf litter. During autumn nothing happened, since winter the bucket was in my flat, kept moist and almost completely covered by a tray with other stuff. One week ago I noticed primordia and this time they looked pretty. The picture below is from today. I think I will give it another day or two. Can't wait to eat my first maitake.

I guess it would be more helpful if I add more images. This is how I found it fruiting one day:

You won't see it, but the bag had a couple of small holes here and there.

I kept the soil surface moist by misting every couple of days, perhaps daily during fruiting. In the end, the harvested fruit was dripping wet, so I guess, I could have stopped misting at the branching stage.
