Seems that this time will not be able to taste them, I had to cut many pieces rotten and fungus flys are attacking it...

This is a serious bummer Toni.  I was really enjoying watching this
species develop, for the first time.

I have had a fly problem, but it seems to have chilled out a bit.
(I was growing some herb in my man-cave when I had my gnat problem)

Awesome pics! A while back I used your first pics for a month as a screen saver.  All those bubbly primordial oozes!

It looks like it's doing what it's supposed to do, leafing out.
I bought a block from FP and it looked just like that.  (But I over-watered it and gave it bacterial blotch.) :mad2:

Yea, me too I overwatered it and I realized too late, to me the most difficult thing is avoid bacteria, gnats and drying out during the long time fruiting. Definitely a difficult process, hope have better luck next time.

Hey Toni, it somehow skipped the branching stage, while the pore tissue around the remaining fruitbodies indicates too much light.

Anyway, this is much better than my first attempt, where I got nothing but pore tissue.

If this story continues to be difficult to control, consider applying a layer of soil on top, before the initial blobs appear.

What are light needs/cycle of this species?

(any other "less light" species?)

It does help a lot, recalling how G. frondosa fruits in nature. The mycelium leaves its wooden home below ground, where there is high moisture and darkness. Brains develop just below the surface under leaf litter and only the late branching as well as the final leaf stage are exposed to sunlight, FAE and lower humidity.

JD, I am not aware of other species, which fuck up like this, when being exposed to too much light. Perhaps other polypores, which fruit from below ground are similar. Sparassis crispa might be one of them, but this one is much more complicated to grow.

Toni, I added pictures of the branching and leaf stage and my simple fruiting environment to my old maitake thread, so you can see what you aim for.

I just read your thread, and maybe if I trim the top layer of the block and bury it, maybe pulls a good flower. But I am going to bury it in the backyard and the new block more or less as you did. So you think that the mycelium must be hidden from the light, only the fruit should see the light, I understood you correctly?

I'm sure it will. My block was all green and brown on the top surface with hundreds of gnats, when I buried it.

I think this is the easiest way, but it does not have to be like that. Maitake blocks definitely tolerate light earlier and at the sides, but not too much at the area, where the primordia are.

You may also look into older threads of Grzyby. He successfully fruited several purchased blocks indoor by closing the bags except holes around primordia:

Well finally I cut the top of the block an buried it in a pot with some peat and leaves.

About the fruiting conditions, I had that block next to a north window, that means that light reached it indirectly whenever and not too much light and this makes me think that probably I failed leaving the bag too much time, because in that farm seems well lighted and moreover they don´t case the blocks, something that does not fit.

Right about the lights, their lamps should be brighter than an average winter day, assuming you are somewhere at medium height in the northern hemisphere.
I did my first try in a room with south facing windows in summer, when I got nothing but pore tissue, so I'm pretty sure this useless pore tissue around the fruitbodies is connected to light. But maybe something else played a role too. We still need a culprit for the skipped branching stage. Was there any other climate change besides dropping humidity?

Yes, that block start fruiting on its own in a room without windows and already you could see what became pores in the bag. The temperature was from 13 to 15ºC and no more changes observed. We have not talked about over suplementation, I spawned that block with 1200 ml. of wheat spawn perhaps too much.

Ok, so the reason for the pore tissue remains unclear, while low temperatures should trigger early fruiting.
Regarding supplementation, I often read about high rates, like in this abstract:
