I innoclated logs last fall and didn't seal them with wax

I inoculated 8 logs last April with shiitake plugs and sealed them with wax like it says on the instructions.

This past October I ordered another 300 plugs and inoculated 8 more logs. I had asked a guy who had written a mushroom book if he seals the plugs with wax which he told me no he doesn't bother to do that so I didn't seal them with wax, but I read in the Sepp Holzer book and see on here that people keep saying to seal the plugs with wax.

The logs currently have a few inches of snow on them up in south central Maine, it was 4 months ago that I put the plugs in and never sealed them with wax. Should I go back and seal them with wax or is it too late ? How important is this step ? Should I worry about it ? The logs are in an area where there are evergreens and significant shade. I hope some mushrooms will pop up from the first batch this spring.

I have only sealed once, it adds too much to the labor, so I have not done it since. The Myc is strong and runs fast, there is just no need IMHO. If you want to you can, it has been pretty cold up there since you did it? no worry's

Yea, so the part of Maine I am in I believe to be zone 4B which is minimum temps down to -20 or -25. We had no snow practically until last week when we got 6 inches or so, then a couple of days after that it went down to between -10 and -15 or so at night and then back up to 10, but the typical winter daytime temps are like 15 or 20. I have also heard of putting blankets over the logs if there is no snow, but I haven't done that and there is some snow now that should stay. Should I be concerned about that ?

For my zone which species of shiitake should I consider or does that matter ?

I have been stacking the logs in a log cabin type style, but the Sepp Holzer books says to bury the logs standing up so part of the log is in the ground. He says that way the log will always have access to moisture from the ground as well as some nutrients. My land seems very moist anyway, but I was thinking of trying that ..

I used maple logs for all my shiitake so far, I do have some oak trees slated for the next batch whenever that may be ..

the only logs i didnt wax ended up with a bug infestation that bored directly into each plug..
