Pleurotus log using a 2 Liter bottle
    #2422788 - 03/12/04 08:26 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Got 3 half pints of pleurotus on rye here ready to spawn to some chopped wheat straw. Was planning of using a 2 liter bottle clear plastic to make a small log out of it.

How would you prepare the bottle for this?! I would cut the top of the bottle first and seal it with some saranwrap or ziploc bags once it's filled. I'm just not sure about the holes.

I would like to fruit the log inside the bottle so I don't have to remove it from there. Should I make some slices with an exacto or drill some holes ? How many?!

Any tips would be good to hear.

2 liters bottles are a good idea after all  I think you should drill about 20 holes (?3/8" diameter). You need a hole at about every 2-3". Taped saranwrap should do the trick. Slices with an exacto is not a good idea since the plastic bottle is so rigid, the oysters won't be strong enough to push it. Be sure to pack your straw enough so the oysters don't form invitro and you can use the part you cut out as a base it will be flat and stable. with 3 half pint you should be able do colonize 5-6 "2 liters" mix your spawn and straw in a separate container so the spawn is mixed evenly. At this stage you don't need to worry much about contamination since your straw is pasteurized and the spawn is fully colonized.

Keep us posted!
