i think this is the attitude of most people regardless of what they would have you believe. there needs to be a lot of institutions in place before a group can be "freed". for example, if slavery was still the only way to be competitive in the global market place we would still be engaging in it no matter who stands up for their rights. of course the first people who stand up for their rights are generally the ones who get the short end of the stick, which is what the young woman in question is experiencing, but they also pave the way for the majority to take action. if someone want's to stand up for their rights they should pick their battles carefully and make sure the correct social institutions are in place so that their dissidence actually makes a difference. if this young lady really believes in her cause then she must be ecstatic that her protest is getting worldwide attention.

Calling it the face of Christianity is baiting and unnecessary imo.

But then i do get the feeling the face of Christianity is very different in the US compared to the UK.

But yes. The people threatening her are prize pricks. I hope they reap what they sow.

I do like the idea of secularism being maintained in a country where many people fled from religious persecution.

I do hope the 16 year old is not damaged in any way for her actions.

I do however wonder why on earth she bothered and whether she was getting backing from somewhere.

I don't find religion in any culture upsetting or oppressive but i have never had to live through it being so i suppose.

If i had seen that prayer in any public place i would think it was a reflection of those who were there and wrote it and. believed in it etc. It would only be if i was feeling pressure or force to believe or be indoctrinated that i would care to do anything about it. And perhaps this girl was?

I just hope this is a point for freedom of thought/belief.and not just another notch in the bashing of Christianity.

My gay psychedelic friend is a Christian. I realise many would declare him a heretic. But he is one by his own definition. A follower of Christ so to speak. And he's is literally the kindest, most compassionate person I know.

I find that hard to believe. Your real goal imo is to remove yourself from suffering.  Killing yourself will be the most likely way to accomplish that.

Is it? There is no universal face, however atheists are the most hated group here in the Colonies. That is very widespread and the hatred only stems from religious groups. There are no atheist groups hating other atheist groups because "My disbelief in God is more powerful and truer than your disbelief in God!"

If 'real' Christians want to be taken seriously and not lumped in with nutcases, then they should be as vocal in protest at various abuses, but generally remain quiet.

If you say you are a true Christian and tell me somebody else is not and both of you tell you that you are true Christians, is it really my place to determine which is which? Hell, no!

I have mentioned this before, but a few years back in the enlightened Silicon Valley city of Plao Alto, adjoining Standford University, was a very nice public library and every Saturday they would feature a guest speaker from 10-11 AM. For a while they had invited various religious leaders to speak, no problem, but when they invited a Wiccan priestess, the local nutter Christian soccer moms went ballistic in protest and had the Wiccan banned to protect young Cody and Brittany from demonic influence.

True story, bro.

i'm noticing that most if not all of the hateful comments are from what seem to be other teenagers. i don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but teenagers generally are hyper-dramatic dipshits. i won't make any apologies for christians going out of their way to act like idiots, but this seems like more like business as usual for high schoolers (including the girl who started it).

Neither would a couple hundred hate mongering teens be a good depiction of the face of Christianity.

I'm not a Christian but living in the bible belt has taught me that every Christian has their own wacky beliefs and prejudices. No matter how hard you try, you can't generalize these people or any other group.

Do Muslim terrorists represent the face of Islam? To many idiots, yes but in reality, no.

And I share the same disdain for Christianity as many of you do, but I know plenty of good Christians that are not batshit crazy like those people in the link.

What is really "exposed" is the childishness, immaturity, and hate that some people share and call themselves by the same name. Not the fault of the entire group but the individuals who have a skewed sense of morality.

There are no 'legitimate' or 'illegitimate' christian churches.  Who are you to say that the christiantily espoused by the KKK is not illegitimate?  They sure seem like a christian organization to me.
