Aquatic Euthanasia
    #15597781 -

I have a new fish tank, and was given a male betta fish (a quite attractive one too, though somewhat old).  It looks sick in a number of ways - I think it might have a tumor at the base of a fin - and besides this, I would like to be able to keep more than one fish at a time and male bettas fight one another and have issues with females too.

Since I don't know anyone who has an aquarium and can take a fish off my hands that might die soon anyway, I'm considering what can only be called aquatic euthanasia.  Consensus on a few websites is that putting the fish in a bowl of water with some glycol oil added, then freezing the fish, is the most humane way to go.

I don't want to have to hunt for glycol oil, which is supposed to "numb" the fish while it freezes, and I'm also skeptical of some of these off-the-wall remedies.  Meanwhile, I happen to have plenty of benzocaine (Oragel, stuff like that) on hand, and wonder whether the benzocaine might be a better option in addition to being easier, could it indeed be more likely to be effective?

The fate of this fish has not yet been determined, but when I have to decide I'd like to know what to do.  Anyone experienced with aquariums here?

I know even better. Blow a firecracker in his aquarium. The shockwave will kill him instantly and you'll get a show out of it.

Is it fair to euthanize another living creature because you want more? Get him a smaller tank and put the others in his current aquarium.

Wouldn't that blow up my aquarium along with my fish?  I don't want to have to clean that up.

That said, a ziplock bag and some sort of jerry-rigged firecracker would probably be a very humane way to do it; kinda like the guy in Dr. Strangelove riding an atomic bomb, I imagine it would be instant.

That's very inventive - thank you Patlal.  You very well might have just started a meme on youtube.  Should I figure out a way to make some firecrackers waterproof, and should I end up having to resort to execution, if I go the firecracker route I'll be sure to record it on video.

Hey, what about electrocution?  It wouldn't be hard to alligator-clip a car battery to the bowl ...

this is what i currently have.

sorry for the poor picture quality, my phone sucks...

a few years ago i also had a 55g salt water fish tank with a beast of a filtration system and a 400 lighting system. the whole tank itself had about 1200.00 worth of equipment, fish, coral, and other misc. unfortunately it became too expensive and i had to sell it all. that was a sad sad day...

One person blows up a fish in a plastic bag with a firecracker on youtube, and a few thousand other people see it, get drunk, and film themselves doing the same thing at frat parties and the like.  Then, of course, it all gets uploaded to youtube and voila - a meme is born.  "Fish go boom" or something like that.

Then it ends up on Tosh.0 ... oh the humanity!

Edit: So does anybody have an opinion about the benzocaine?

I have eight tanks at the moment.

I breed cichlids as a hobby,  make a little bit of money at it too.

Serious answer to your question:

IWhen I've got to put a fish down I use clove oil.

Available as a toothache remedy at any place that sells toothbrushes.

Put the fish you need to kill in a small cup of water.  add a few drops of clove oil. (if your clove oil doesn't have enough alcohol in it to mix with water,  add some vodka or other cheap liquor)

A few drops will put it to sleep,  a few more drops will kill it.

Then flush.

Flushing live fish is a bad idea if you care about them suffering.

Apparantly there have been studies showing a goldfish can survive in sewage for several hours.  (san fransisco is considering banning goldfish partly for this reason- and partly because they're just fucked in the head)

Bettas are stupid fish in my opinion.

All they ever do for me is bother other fish, eventually catch some incurable disease and die.

I've got good pics of some 'real' fish on the other computer

The best way of killing a fish fast and humanly would be to throw it in a bucket filled with ice and water. This should stun it, and kill it pretty fast.

Don't just throw it in the freezer with water, it will slowly die of cold shock which will cause it some pain.

Edit; ^ what does the oil do? Numb it? benzocaine or something similar should help.

Clove oil is an anesthetic.

Used to temporarily knock them out for surgery, etc,

I use it when I need to trim the teeth on my puffers

Overdose will kill them quickly and painlessly.

The alcohol is just to get the clove oil to mix with the water.  You're not trying to get them drunk or anything

Benzocaine sounds like it might work,  I really don't know.

Clove oil is cheap and easy

I don't like the ice water/freezing idea.  I did one of those polar bear plunge things a few years ago.  Jumping into ice water hurts like hell
