Is UTI edu a good place to start to learn about cars?

I don't know much about auto repair, and I kinda want to go to school to learn how to fix cars.

My girls car is always breaking down, same with my moms.

and I'm just like.. Uuhhhh... Go to the mechanic.

It would be cool to fix them by myself, save money, give me something to do.

Saw a commercial for UTI, thought it might be a good idea.

Also, going to buy a book from Haynes for my fiancés 01 ford taurus. She said she'd let me tinker with it, and if it broke more, or didn't get fixed she wouldn't mind laughing at me and taking it to a real mechanic.

So yeah..

UTI Edu

Yay or nay?

Edit: any good forums about car mechanics/parts - Learning? I mean.. If my car had a flat tire on the highway.. or anywhere.. I'd be completely fucking lost. And stuck.

Help!

All trade schools, or just the commercial ones?

hmm just the commercial ones really. And actually most of the one's I've heard about are the art institutes, and I've also heard some negative things about ITT tech.

I'd say talk to people in the industry and see what they do.

UTI is overpriced and you will end up working as a "lube technician."

I know two people who went there.

EDIT: And I almost went myself.. I decided against it and screwed over some other kid who was supposed to find an apartment with me because school started in a month. Sorry guy.:sad:

I live in central florida and they have a campus about 2 miles from where I work at. I had a few buddies graduate from there. One works at a ford dealership in atl, one works at an independant bmw shop, and another one works down in west palm for mercedes. All of them had jobs 1-2 months after they graduated.  My buddy that works at the mercedes dealership is the one I keep in contact with the most. He's making 700 a week and mercedes pays 150 dollars for 5 years towards his school loan. He also went out to california after he graduated from uti and went to a mercedes school which was at a uti campus. Everyone told me if you go don't go in there with a big head thinking you know it all, blah, blah.  Go there for the year and imply yourself. Once you get done with it get ready to relocate to where ever the work is. My biggest problem with the school is that each one of the friends I know that graduated, graduated with around 50,ooo in debt that's including the 6 thousand dollar snap on kit they financed.  To me there is a cheaper way to become an auto tech.

If all you want to do is learn some basic stuff about cars, read car magazines or watch how-to videos/read your cars manual and tackle the easy jobs yourself.  As your confidence level goes up, tackle the harder jobs.

You'd be surprised how simple some things that cost so much to get fixed really are.  As long as you have the tools you need, you can do most anything mechanical on the surface of the engine.  The majority of the time spent during a repair is usually something like trying to get a rusty bolt loose or getting your fingers in places where they're not supposed to be.  The computer stuff is impossible to fix though because you need all these fancy gizmos..  My car's a 1984 so I don't have to deal with any of that crap though.

It basically just takes time, but you can learn on your own or have a friend help you out.

tuition will run you about $30,000 for 9 mos. compare that to the cost of an
education at Harvard at $36,000 for a year, these are tuition costs prior to
financial aid so by the end of it you'll see about $45k+ in education costs

it's far more sensible to me to hit a community college and get vocational
training there at around $9k/yr for a full course load, places like UTI arent
going to give you any more education than any place else will and they'll
often times cost you in terms of employment because the majority of these
graduates are dumbasses that cant remember what they've learned after graduation
so most employers that have dealt with them in the past laugh at them

all you need to do is pass the ASE testing and you're a mechanic by most
industry standards

I graduated too. In my opinion, it was a waste of time. I joined the Navy right after graduation. The tuition was like 12000 when I went 30000 is way too overpriced. It's all just nuts and bolts, take your time have patients and figure it out for yourself you will learn a lot more. There are also a lot of forums for information on specific cars.

the only way its worth a damn is if you go to one of the after graduate programs.

but only if you want to work at a dealer. if you want to learn just to wrench on your families cars and what not a few courses at the community college will do just fine.

$700/wk is not very good.  I made substantially more than that on a co-op while still in school.

I nearly went there, decided to go into medicine instead.  My tuition was gonna be ~ 30 grand.  Not worth it if you're just interested
