I have veterans benefits, I better take advantage of free college. That's why I go I see what you are saying. I assume most the people going to these expensive schools also get help from their families.

I'm not paying for school yet, neither is my family.  Every year I take out a 9k loan and am in my second year.  When I graduate I'll be in around 50k of debt because my apartment over the next 2 years will run 12k on top of the original 36.

What branch of the military were you in?  Right now I'm majoring in health and fitness and if I don't get a job offer that I think is worth it, I'll be signing up for the marines or navy.  I have been told by marines in my classes that this is the way to go because I will become an officer and have a higher pay correct?  That's if I join the marines that is, I think the navy seals seems more for me because my brother served with them for 6 years and loved it.

I'm a dependent. My dad was in the military for twenty so years  and is 100% disabled from it..... I get some pretty kick ass benefits for it. . . I am a communications major.

I went to college and could not get a job matching the degree I got. I settled for a different job that has nothing to do with my degree but uses some of the experience I got from the part time job I had while in college. The job also does not require a degree and probably could have gotten it without one although im pretty sure it did help my resume some. Most of the people on my team dont have degrees at all. It pays $46k a year and I dont really see a whole lot of upward mobility.

what was your major and were you willing to go anywhere on earth?

I would rather be in search of a job in some moderate debt with a 4 year degree than without one!

I do not disagree that many colleges are primarily business ventures.

I'd like to point out that art majors regularly get hired by a lot of PR firms, magazines and the TV industry for 40k+ per year. Having a degree in art means you get hired before the artist who doesn't have a degree. There are lots of jobs that need professionally trained artists.

My major was occupational safety. Its not a very common degree program and a lot of times people who aren't familiar with the field will think there isnt a market for safety pro's but, every company has safety people on staff. We find most of our employment in more dangerous professions such as manufacturing or construction but even office jobs have safety people because we are educated in ergonomics as well as legal liability and workmens comp type stuff. We also do the drug tests..

The location thing was actually an issue I believe. I was free to go wherever I wanted at first but then I got married and my wife is an officer in the military so I had to go where she was stationed. Unfortunately there isnt too many of any kind of job where I am at. And the few safety jobs I sent in resumes for wanted 3-5 years experience in the field, and being a new graduate they were not available to me.

Not to mention my college ranks 7th in the nation for graduation rates and its only 40%. No comment on how colleges let this happen and still make the biggest buck.

no way.

none of the Ivy league schools drop out more than 10% of their graduates.

Harvard is notorious for grade inflation.

This statistic, I do not believe.

Thats my schools grad rates. Look on the side, the little statistic they throw in.

That's why we need high school counselor's to be more proactive in informing students of options that don't include a higher degree.

Also, every high schooler should come out of school with an elementary understanding of at least one trade.

Honestly that could be a problem. Counselers seem to get kids thinking they have to have a degree to succeed in life. Honestly, I am kind of happy to see people drop out of school. I know it sounds like a dick thing to say, but the more people that dont complete college the more valuable my degree becomes.

I think that places should have intensive on the job training so you

could avoid going to school.  Go to a place that offers what you are

wanting to do. Take a general aptitude test and then get training for

exactly what they need you to do, rather than taking classes that you

aren't going to apply.

Going to college and getting a great education has been the best decision I've ever made.  I went to a cheap State school, total cost was under 40k.

I've received a lot of opportunities that never would have been available if I didn't have a degree.

In the end, it also landed me a great job that I love.  It pays well, great benefits, great retirement, the whole bit.  It's worth a lot more than what I paid.

I've been to about 4 high schools and 2 Junior colleges and in that time I only met 2 counselors who actually really showed a genuine interest in helping the students. It even made me think I should do that because I know I could do a better job than some of them.

you owe on average $100,000 to debts for a 4 year degree(actual average is $92,000 but damn close enough).

Thats a completely ridiculous figure.  Only rich kids with pedigree go to such expensive schools.  Normals schools dont cost even half of that.  My entire 4 year college tuition bill was $20,000.

Our society needs to embrace education not shun it.

Don't go to school, don't learn state of the art information, and formation of logical reasons, and further more, don't wonder why later in life you have a shitty job, no financial future, no opportunities.

It is worth every dollar, and I can't wait to be done this Spring.

On to the next chapter, law school.

Fuck the financial part, money comes, money goes, an education is something no one can take away from you.
