Confirmed Ps.Eucalypta pictures.
    #1557546 - 05/18/03 09:45 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Here are some fresh fruits of the mushroom we have identified using Guzman's description of Ps.Eucalypta with smaller spores than Subaeruginosa and with different cystidia.
It should be noted that the two psilocybes of Guzman's Australiana (now correctly delineated as Subaeruginosa) and Eucalypta were distinguished by minute differences in shape and spore size. Regional specimens of Pan.Cyanescens vary with a much greater diversity than Guzman's two descriptions.
However, as the specimens originally supplied seemed rather unique, and as the spore size and cystidia were so consistant with Guzman's description I was unsure whether it was indeed a seperate species, or just another variant of Subaeruginosa.
Here are the pics - id like to hear what people have to say about the macroscopic appearance.

The photos dont do the pale - possibly sterile - gills justice this is better:

Note that attachment to the stem - also quite different to Subaeruginosa.
regional variant or different species??

I got the culture about nine monthes ago and it was palced in the garden on pine bark mulch, eucalypta and a few other things. Fruited very well. Im drying these out to have them again examined.

They didnt seem to ascend at all. The gills arent distant at all really - quite similar to normal subs other than being 100% sterile! They are infact identical to some of the psilocybes ive found in Melbourne which had the same microscopic characteristics as the others here. Id say they are pretty similar to Victoria subs. Certainly the psilos i found in northern NSW - which reville has just taken some pics of - are much more unique.
Im beginning to get pins on an unknown psilocybe that was picked somewhere in NSW by Aussishroomhead and it looks much more interesting. the second isolate of the Eucys and yellowish like you would expect from a panaeolus. Weird as.

Great photos BM - I'm glad they finally got going! So similar to other subs... those gills look great too - they do look a little more distant than the ones i have been finding lately.... Any others on the horizon?
