Horrid mushroom
    #15542388 -

I just checked my old duck pen and was horrified to see about 50 of these hands. I saw it's called zombie's hand mushroom. It said Clathrus archeri but it doesn't quite look like the ones in the image search. Not too many chances of misidentification. The eggs look like duck eggs and I would like to try it.

They are calling it Clathrus archeri but it is not the same color at all.  I'd like to see what a sequence analysis would show for those ones: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ye23L7XG1G0/TZbOtN5T_RI/AAAAAAAAAAU/kblH139g5io/s1600/tangan-zombie.jpg

What do they smell like?

Some type of stinkhorn?

It looks like a duck egg and grows on duck shit?

Those things are crazy looking! Might be Lysurus cruciatus.

Hi sparkie.
Its definitly a stinkhorn, but i do not think its the archeri, i checked the list of endemic mushies for phil and the one mentionned is the Lysurus mokusin, the archeri is not considered to occur in Philippines. Its perfectly edible in egg stage and considered a delicacy especially in Taiwan and the warmer parts of China where its eaten by the horny males who believe it will grant them a whole night long erection. As you are female i do not know what the effects are on the females of the homo sapiens species.Do be sure you need to see them in early stage if they have a tinge of red in the hands who shoot out of the egg.But anyway make sure its not a  left over century duck egg(lol)

Lysurus cruciatus and Lysurus mokusin are very close relatives and by some considered the same species, but the crucuiatus seems to have less colour in the begiining

I would not eat that.  Just because something is considered a "delicacy" does not meat it will taste good.  Take the Durian fruit for instance...

And Durian taste like heaven but smells like hell... but millions eat it and like it"de gustibus et coloribus non discutant"

I've heard durian ice cream is amazing. Basically any way to get rid of the smell but keep the flavor. If you get these properly identified by a trusted identifier I see no reason not to chow down on the eggs.

Really cool species I haven't had prior knowledge of.

Thanks for posting.

Definitely looks "horrid", I wouldn't eat it and I eat ALOT of species. The smell of stinkhorns alone makes me gag!

I have never heard of it's taste described in that way.  Maybe I'm watching the wrong documentaries?

I agree BiteP...ita vero!!..taste, smell, color etc...are all relative. May I add that the egg of most stinkhorns do not smell good nor bad but apparently it is the texture (not the taste nor smell) that most westerners find disagreeable. But in most asian cuisines the yin and yang of texture, taste, flavor, color etc. is really important. I'll eat it and let you all know.
