whereabouts in the country are you. the SW Colorado stinkhorns are all Phallus Impudicus. they look like morels when really small, but then just look like big cocks. never seen one like that except for in other ID requests.

They look to be one of the close relatives of the Oyster Mushroom. If you dig down to the base you should find that they are growing directly from wood.

Happy mushrooming!

I agree Toxicman, my initial reaction was oysters or Pleurocybella porrigens, but judging by the shape it's more likely pleurotus ostreatus. The gills are too large and spaced to be gomphus.

it does appear to be some type of oyster but it just seems too leathery and thin to be ostreatus.

Certainly not Gomphus clavatus.... where did you get that idea??

Pleurocybella porrigens seems too delicate and stark white.

Pleurotus ostreatus also appears more flimsy, and the cap texture is different.

Okay, I'm pretty sure what you have is Hohenbuehelia geogenia, or maybe a related species, such as H. petaloides.

Anyone else???

There's a lot of different wild variations of oysters, some are very delicate, some are tougher, some are thick some are thin.

CureCat i think you may be right. Hohenbuehelia petaloides looks exactly like what i have and several descriptions match it perfectly as well.

I'm going to have to say case closed unless anyone else believes differently.

Thanks guys!

Well, one of the key traits to Hohenbuehelia, is that they have wavy gills. Also, the caps are known to get wavy. Looks like thats what they are.
