Im just guessing but the split stem sounds like the humidity might be low. If the humidity conditions arent ideal it may slow pinning or lessen the # of pins.
My first cakes were low yielding(uncased)
When i later dumped a little casing soil on and around them, they pinned a lot more(second batch) about 10-20 fruits per cake vs. the previous 5 or 6.
