So I Transplanted a 30+ Year Old Bonsai Deerberry Plant ...

So there has been this deerberry bush growing on top of some white oak roots for as long as I can remember being alive. Now mind you these roots act like a bonsai pot due to the shallowness, so it's been a miniature bush.

After looking at what I thought to be a young seedling next to it, I discovered that it was merely a sucker. By then I had removed this sucker from its mama and I thought about the possibility of it not surviving, so I went batshit and spent the next two hours using a hose to efface the roots of the mother plant away from her soil. It probably wasn't the right time of year to do this, but I have a feeling she'll recover soon enough. I'm probably going to put her in a mixture of Foxfarm Ocean Forest and some pasteurized river sand.

Well I potted her up today. You can see some dying leaves as I left her in the water longer than I intended to.



Anyways, here's what the soil she came out of looked like



I replicated this as best as I could.

It's got at least 10 nodes looking like the ones above. From what I've read, the two main factors to their growth and survival includes soil pH/drainage and amount of light received. Right now they are in about 60-70% light which nearly mimics the condition they were originally in.

I plan on putting either a clone of or the progeny of this deerberry in the same exact spot where I took this one from.

That roof has stopped the frost from defoliating it. Maybe it'll retain its leaves into January. You can see the red pigmentation on the margins where the chloroplasts have broken down.

The berries are bitter and small so there's no real culinary value, but it's in the same genus as blueberries. Something really interesting about this species is the genetic and morphological variability. So much so that some northern vareties are incompatible with southern ones. If I recall correctly.

I just wanted it cause it's so old (it's been around all my life and is hardly larger than some saplings of the same species) and it's so small.

To be honest, I jacked that cutting (looks like two of em, but it's just one with the forked branching) from a plant at my school. I'm glad I did because theirs died this year. They neglected them, letting them go with water for weeks in the height of the Summer (full sun and 100 deg. F+). I figured though in a couple years I could take a cutting back down there to replace it.
