wood planer
    #15463809 -

i know someone whos cutting some really wonky boards, and i want to buy him a planer but im only familiar with hand planers

which i think will be lightweight and tedious

so what do i need to know about planers to get the right one?

pluss im looking more for a 300$ vs 3000$ one

a simple little dewalt thickness planer is suitable for most tasks but he
needs a jointer to make things flat before running it through a planer

are these surface planers the same thing as a jointer, crappy tire only has mastercraft, and home depot seems to only sell surface planers which are a box instead of a table

those little hand planers are bad for most things, fine for trimming a door but little else

a muscle powered hand plane is more suited to wood working, you have better control

this type is meant more for thicknessing or smoothing the surface of already
flat wood, a jointer is important because it gives you a flat surface to
start with from the warped and twisted lumber. the jointer is used for making
a flat face and a flat edge but they're very size specific, 6" jointers can
only handle material up to six inches wide which is fine for most uses.

your friend can learn to use a router or a table saw in place of a jointer
for squaring an edge and he can learn how to mill the face flat with a
little practice

I seriously recommend a set of hand planes unless someone is doing
production work. because they can replace the machines at a fraction
of the cost for operation and the results that little extra time can give

I suggest a japanese plane if he's older because they work on the draw
instead of a push

what is he using to cut the lumber? i have a woodmizer band sawmill, and it will start to cut wavy boards when the blade is dull, or if i push the carriage through the log too fast, the knots will cause warping because of the extra hardness. also, he needs to slowly cure the boards in a dark shed layered and stickered with enough weight to keep the boards from twisting or bowing. it will also help if he avoids logs with hook, sway, or dog leg. i also have a powermatic planer, which is a bit out of your price range, but a great machine. i milled enough wood for a 20'x20' drying shed, 10'x15' chicken coop, 20'x30' barn, 30'x40' greenhouse, fencing, and board/baton finished inside house walls.
