Wise wood - Tobacco Pipe (Status - Finished!)

EDIT#3: Finished pipe.
Finally...what do you think?
Ok, so im working on a new pipe today, and i start thinking..man...wood is awesome.
Like..deep, rich, wise fuckin' wood!
Right now im working with Paduak heartwood, from west africa. It should make a wicked pipe.
I'll post pictures of my progress, maybe..
EDIT: You asked for it, so here it is....
The first step, cutting out the rough shape. I did this with a jig saw, which took a long ass time, due to the hardness of the wood.
And next, is the drilling, which is extremely suspenseful. Screw up just a bit, and the entire pipe is ruined. Luckilly, i was able to line up the two holes perfectly the first time! A bit of pre planning goes a long way, haha. I also did some final trimming with the jig saw, you can see it taking shape now. mmm.
More photos to come!
EDIT#2: Ok, phew, that was a lot of fucking carving...My carving knife is extremely dull now. But i think it's finally in it's final shape, now all that i need to do is sand the bowl and outer surfaces smooth, i may also try to make the stem a bit thinner...

It definitely looks on the side of huge.
Pretty damn k3wl, though.

haha, it does look huge, Although i think it's due to the photographs, it's normal sized in real life, and will only continue to get smaller as the wood is carved away.

Damn, that is tight. I got a headrush seeing it come into its final form.
I wish I had a pipe like that. Wood rocks. I bet it's a different experience than smoking out of glass.
Btw, I laughed when I read that you cut that honking piece of wood on that small blade. =)

HAhA yeah, the blade was smoking the entire time, it was basically burning through the wood, it was aweful..my neighbours were probably wondering why someone was yelling "FUCK THIS PIECE OF SHIT SAW!" in my garage....
And yeah, glass is cool becuase it is inert, it does not add any flavour to the smoke, good for lets say...weed
But wood pipes are very cool, becuase with age, they build up a distinct flavour (if it's a high quality pipe, and wood) depending on what your smoking out of it. It will also build up a sweet rock hard "cake" on the inside of the bowl. I love the idea of something becoming better with age...

Nice job! I'm somewhat of a pipe collector and maker myself. I have a suggestion for you. This is something I came up with for boring my bowls. If you are planning to use sandpaper, give this a read.
You will need a drill, bench grinder, a wood-spade bit (the flat kind), and a drill press (optional).
Grind away the corners of the spade bit to give it the rough shape of the inside of your bowl. Next, put your spade bit into the drill and turn it on. Now, with the bit spinning in the drill, gently grind the bit to a nice round shape. This method will ensure the bit is balanced. Once your bit has its shape, sharpen it. Grind off one corner on each side in the opposite fashion.
I can't find my bowl-bit right now but here's a drawing of what I'm talking about.
This is a nifty tool to have around when making pipes.

haha yeah, i was trying to find a tool like that, as i don;t really have the grinder to make my own, i was planning on putting a screen at the bottom, thats why there is sort of like steps of different bore sizes, i figure it would be a good idea if im going to be smoking any grass out of this pipe, as i hate getting clogs. I realize that a flat bottom bowl isnt exactly the best for smoking, but it will do. Id love to see some of the pipes you've made, if you want you can add me to msn, or something. peeeace.

Awesome job man. Since I've seen this, I'm thinking of giving it a go in one of my school's many shops.
How did you drill the long hole in the stem?

Thanks for the comments!
And i don't think ill be selling any of my pipes, sorry. Unless your willing to pay big $$$ haha.
To drill the hole, i drew some lines on the rough shape of the pipe with a ruler, and then used a long drill bit to carefully drill as striaght as i could, you need to use a vice to hold it. It can be frustrating. Just make sure you drill the holes before spending a lot of time working on it, in case you fuck up.

Very nice
How are you going to clean the stem of that thing once it gets clogged? Are the holes big enough for pipe cleaners?

ha, you could always painstakingly sand out the bowl, it would take hours and hours, but think of the love!
And Gumby, all the holes are big enough for pipe cleaners..and that's what i'll be using. Im glad you like my pipe.

Have you guys seen the Native American stuff? I think it was a Cherokee pipe I saw (some time ago now). I used to do a bit myself (cut myself up a few times too!) I have some well seasoned Yew you would be interested in (however as wood for a pipe? Well it seeds within its own bark so I don't know.) Also -and a much longer story I don't have the fingers for- I have visited (in Powys) one of the oldest trees in Britain (which I dated by site to within 16 years of it's age -beginners luck, coincidence and judgement-) a 3000 Yew in a Churchyard (one may however argue the church was in the tree!). Also we just started getting "Pueblo" (organic Virginian Tobacco) here, anyone tried it yet?
