Feeling a little frustrated....
    #1542016 - 05/12/03 04:36 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Why is it that vets cannot help out newbies trying to find morels? I've read up, at least several online and offline sources. I've gone out to the woods at least a dozen times to come up empty handed. When the advice given is taken absorbed and used, and there is no fruit of success what is one left to do? Why is it that veterans will not give personal first hand help to ensure that their past time is carried on?

because morel hunting is like gold hunting, do you give away a spot of a gold mine? I certainly wouldn't. Morel hunting isn't a past time like cultivation, it's an art - which takes a long time to perfect, and once you've perfected it - giving away your spots takes all your work, and flushes it down the toilet.

That's my guess

So selfishness is the name of the game and friendliness ends at the edge of the woods? I can understand if you hunt on your own land, not everyone wants someone on their land even when they are there. Some people consider a one time invitation an anytime invitation. Hunters of public lands share their stomping grounds with everyone else, whats the point of keeping it from a few? Helping someone out doesn't mean showing someone your own spots.

All I ask for is someone to come with me, have a good time in the woods, puff a few bowls and tell me that, "You are in the right place". I feel that a lot of other people feel the same way.

Its no fun when you already know where the treasure is!!

I've been looking for morels for a little while now and still haven't found any. I'll search forever... and when that day comes that I stumble across a morel, it will be a very happy day. It will be a day that I worked so hard for...

I go hunting all the time too..its not like I only go once in a while. I'll go out on hikes and drives and walks all over the place just about every day when I get out of work.

If someone told me a spot, id be like... hell no, I'm going to find my own!

You have a good point. Here's something from the other side of it.

I showed some people a spot I knew that produces Boletus edulis and Boletus barrowsii fairly regularly each year. Ever since then, about a third of the times I go there the area has been clean picked. Somebody has gone through and picked even the old, rotting Russulas that can't be good for anything. Is it one of the people I showed the spot? Maybe it's somebody one of them showed the spot? There's no way to tell. But it wasn't happening before.

It takes a lot of time and effort to find good spots for various mushrooms, as you're discovering. I occasionally show a spot or two to select friends. But I warn them that they need to not show the spot to anybody or none of us get any of the mushrooms.

You're right about the greed. There are people out there who will take everything if they have the chance.

All I can suggest is perseverance. Keep looking for spots. Keep trying to make friends who can help you, and who you can help later. As you hunt for spots for mushrooms, keep track of what you find where. Later on, somebody else will want to know where they can find some of those. Then you can decide if you want to share one of your spots with them. Most expeditions I do hunting for spots fail. But if you don't look you won't find any at all.

One other possibility - try finding a local mycological society. Most of the people in those tend to focus on edibles, and you are much more likely there to find somebody to help a beginner out.

Good luck and happy mushrooming!

Let me use an analogy to show you something. Before hunter education, accidents were becoming a problem. (any firearm accident is a problem, but that is beside the point). Hunter education was introduced teaching gun safety and accidents went down.
Teach newbies what responsible mushroom hunting is. I've read of using onion bags to allow air and spores to escape the bag, crushing rotten 'shrooms to dispurse spores, and leaving some to propogate and for other people.

Thanks for the links. Muscoda is just under three hours away. At least I know now that they are growing here. I guess I am just looking for the company of someone who knows what they are doing. I try to get friends into it, but after a half an hour of walking their interest is fading its hard to keep looking.

I'm not sure where I am going to go tomorrow, but I'll be hunting. Anyone in the Milwaukee area interested in hunting tomorrow, send me a PM.

I understand that old growth forests are primo, how much undergrowth should I look for? In the middle of the woods, or at the edges of paths?

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I live in Alabama and am feeling the same way. I have friends that will take mushrooms with or from me but none with hunting experience...I just want someone to guide and mentor me out in the field

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
They are talking about Morels...  Not magic mushrooms.  Don't ask for hunting partners, and don't dig up 7 year old threads unless you have a good reason to.
