YIELD & rule of "THUMB".
    #1541707 -

I am amazed at the number of "Q's" along the lines of;  what is the expected yield from 1/2 pint & pint cakes.

The variables in everyone's circumstance are so large, it is impossible to even guestimate. With today's dunking techniques, to rehydrate cakes, high yields from cakes is possible. Excepting, that return is limited by available nutrients in any cake.

The rule of "thumb" is this;

Biological Efficiency (B/E) is a term frequently used to describe yield potentials of mushrooms from various substrates.

Simply put, a yield of 1 lb. of fresh mushrooms from 1 lb. of dry substrate is considered to be 100% B/E. 100 to 200% B/E is practical under ideal conditions.

Since mushrooms are approximately 90% water and the base substrate is typically raised to 70 - 75% moisture, 100% B/E is equivalent to saying that 25% of the wet mass of the substrate is converted into fresh mushrooms.

Given the LIMITED amount of nutrients available in a "cake", yield will be small in comparison to bulk substrates. Simply because a bulk substrates are primarily all nutrients & weigh considerably more than "cakes".

On one hand cakes are less demanding, on the other - they have limited yields. Unless, you do a massive amount of them.

If you want large yields, bulk substrates is the route to travel, given the inherent limitation of cakes. Cakes can also be crumbled and/or blended in a food processor (or whatever) & used as spawn into a bulk substrate.

IMHO, cakes are the learning ground, from which one can step up to bulk substrates like horse/cow/straw combinations, and/or compost "bulk" substrates.

Just "be happy" you get any shrooms, your first try. Then, go from there. After all, if you have shrooms, you can make prints (if you want to learn how). Then, the sky is the limit. :tongue:
