ID request please. - Reishi, Ganoderma
    #15347949 -

I live in Chennai, India.  I found this mushroom growing at the base of a tree trunk.  I would

appreciate any help in identifying this mushroom.  Is it ganoderma/reishi?

Very cool that it has a long base like that.  Most fungus you see like that growing on trees are connected from the "cap" directly to the tree.  Neat

You should try to see if you can find psilocybe kashmeriensis, look in lemon grass fields.

Lovely photographs! If you have time it would be a blessing to see other flora and fungal photos from this area. Most of all I love the spider hanging dead and engulfed by the pores on the underside.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.  Can I be absolutely, positively sure that this is a ganoderma?  All the ganodermas I have seen online have a yellow colored border on the cap, but this one does not  (Is it that it will get a yellow border later on maturity?)  Also, FoxDie mentions that most of the caps of this specie are connected directly to the tree?

This specie is growing on a tree right outside my house.  A few days back, there was a poisonous mushroom growing around the base of this tree.  Now it is gone, missing.  I don't know if someone plucked it or it simply was run over by some parked car.  So, if this mushroom is still in the initial growing stage, my major concern now is trying to protect it.

One final query is regarding cloning with potato dextrose agar.  If I want to clone this one, can I simply pluck it now or do I have to let it mature first?

Oh, and thanks for the comments on the pictures.

Sorry for the long post and thank you.

Look on the bottom side, right along the white spongy pores.

Do you see that yellow-orange coloring that borders between the dark reddish brown and the white? That is the growth margin, and beyond that is the white pores growing down.

You can be assured that this is a Ganoderma, and by the looks it is relatively mature.

Ok, but what about that liquid oozing out from the side which is clearly seen in the "upper bottom view" picture?  It's been 3-4 days since it rained here last.  The past few days it is very hot here.  It might be water when the gardener watered the plants.  I'm not sure.

Also, if it is relatively mature, could I harvest it now or should I wait a few more days?  Could someone advise me if cloning is same as other species?  Where can I get more information about cloning this?  And also, how to get spore print from this specie.  Thank you.

I'd harvest now. I usually harvest when they are younger than this, but this looks good still. Cloning is the same as other species, but these are much tougher to cut with a scalpel than gilled mushrooms. Spore print lay it pore side down on foil or plastic.

Ha, nope I haven't had one print that I've picked and the caps are usually covered with spores when I find them.

Now, if I were to harvest it now but not clone immediately, what is the procedure to preserve it?  I might try cloning in 1 week to 10 days time.  As for harvesting, should I just use a sharp knife and cut the stem at the base where it joins the tree?

I'm not sure how you'd preserve it to clone for that amount of time, maybe refrigerate in a paper bag. Cutting the base with a knife sounds good.

A couple of questions are still nagging me.  This specimen is about the size of the palm of a medium build person.  Most of the reishi I see online seem to look at least twice the size of what this one is.  Also, the top part of the cap always has a glossy shiny finish texture in the pictures.  So, why is this specimen - (1) Too small and (2) Have a uneven and rough texture?

maynardjameskeenan, I live in the extreme south and from the name you mention, it seems like a specie that grows in the extreme north of the country.
