Re: Laziest and potentially worst First Grow ever. B+, Madbags, and Audio Receiver heat sources [Re: IamYou]

thanks for the info on temps gentlemen

for experimentation purposes i will leave my current 3 madbags in their overly hot environment just to see how they do. This IS the laziest and potentially worst first grow after all.

What i WILL do however is inoculate my last two madbags with ecuador spores and let them sit at room temperature just to see the difference in growth times between the two. For experimentation purposes i will also add too much spore solution to one bag and a normal amount to the other.

maybe the ecuador spores wouldve been better off in the overly hot environment... but its too late now

Here's a link explaining the "New Moon" spore syringes

http://www.earthstongue.com/site/388422/page/1875237

Whether it's unnaturally dark or not is irrelevant. If it works (which it does) then that's all that matters.

These guys are fucking crazy. Just read the testimonial section:

Quote:
Inoculation was completed on 03/05/2011 at 6:00AM in the morning using “New Moon “ Spce Cst”. I believe a picture is worth a thousand words. See attached photo. [followed by a picture of plates growing green shit]

"Very impressed at this point. Received product in 5 days , saw results in 5 days. This applies to Cambodian, results on azurescens still questionable but I expected slower results on that species.

Hi,I'm tricia.I recently ordered some "creepers".And I've got to say that you guys are the best!!!Awesome spores!!!definitely the fastest colonizers I've ever seen.

I can't believe someone selling spores for microscopy use only would also sell growing supplies... :picard: Stick with sponsors, whatever they're putting in their spore syringes makes them useless for microscopy anyway.

I actually had a pretty big problem with the second syringe that I just tried to use for the first time today.

It turns out that the needle was jammed somehow so I had to remove the needle part from the syringe and I then used another syringe to pull out the required liquid. Probably upped the risk of contamination a decent amount.

There's two criteria I would use to judge the effectiveness of a spore syringe.

1) Will it grow mushrooms?

2) Is it cost effective?

Price is competitive with other vendors so 2 is satisfied. We will see in a month or so if I get mushrooms, but I don't see why not.

I'm surprised people are focusing on the syringe rather than the receiver which is probably keeping the bags too hot :mushroom2:

People are focusing on the syringe for one reason.......

im guessing everyone complaining about the syringes have never actually used them before?  if thats the case then your input is about as reliable as a magic 8 ball's.

If the spores are impotent or contaminated ill be the first to let you guys know. Either it works or it doesn't, and since i dont have a time machine, i have no choice to work with what i already have dont you think?

I've wasted money on them, I've spoken to 5-6 people who also have, earth tongue is a rip off plain and simple. I've spawned to warmer bags and unless they are still over 100 f I temp, they should still be fine as the spores should still be alive.

There is a good chance the op will get mycelium to grow, but I'm certain there will be no fruiting..

11/9 shots taken from the top of the bag. It's really hard to find a good spot to take pics from thanks to the glare, condensation, and vermiculite dirtying the bag.

11/11/11 fifteen days since inoculation

I decided to stop putting the bags on top of my audio receiver. It seems to be moving along faster at this colder temperature.

Anyone think I should break it up for it to colonize faster? Maybe I should do that to 1 or 2 of the bags just for curiosity's sake.

If you've not done that yet, definitely do it at about 20% colonization. But dont do it again after.

I have no idea what % colonization it currently is. Any Ideas?

It actually seems like it's more than 20% already. Maybe I'll do it to the bag that's the least colonized of the three.

Also, I've been worried about contams since I had them at a high temperature for a long time. I smell the bag every once in a while, and they've recently gained a slight mushroomy smell. Nothing offensive, though.

I may have spotted contamination while i was breaking and mixing one of them. I'll update this post with the pic in a min.

If memory serves correct those seeds were never that green :frown:

The pic is pretty fuzzy man but I'd say its contam, just isolate it from everything else and wait it out a bit, see what happens, it will be pretty apparent in a few days.

Green genrally mans contam if I'm not mistaken. If I were you I would break up all your bags just to be sure, plu if its not contamed by then, the breaking up of the grains will let you know if it will

Some bad news for the laziest and potentially worst first grow ever. More evidence of green contams in all 3 bags. Not gonna bother to take a pic at this point, but I will if it gets worse.

What are my chances at this point? Could my mycelium kick it's green ass?

IamYou said:
optimal temp is 86F per P. Staments

That's outdated and incorrect information. We now know that optimal temp is 70-75.

For example, according to RR:
Quote:
At 86F, growth is already slowed to a crawl, and molds are being stimulated.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12541940#12541940
Also from RR:
Quote:
By the way, Stamets never said to use 86F as an ambient air temp for colonizing P cubensis.

75F is probably about perfect for fruiting, but don't sweat it.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10793395#10793395
And one last one from RR:
Quote:
My experience has been the lower temps give meatier fruits and better potency.  Shoot for normal room temp fruiting, because that's just about ideal.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10479204#10479204

I think that perhaps there is a little bit of confusion here. When you quote "At 86F, growth is already slowed to a crawl, and molds are being stimulated" - that probably refers to the outside temperature, not temperature within the jars.

For mycelium growth of cubensis, the ideal temperature for optimal growth is 86. Please see image below.

http://www.lycaeum.org/mv/TMC/tmc_cubensis_temperature.gif

When you think about the native environments of cubensis (tropics and sub-tropics) this makes a lot of sense! Although of course you want to reduce the outside temp to lower than 86, as heat is generated within the jars. But not much, only a few degrees.

So 78f(26c)-82f(28c) would be perfect as an outside temp.
