how long does it take for atenolol to be most effective?
    #15346264 -

i have pretty severe social anxiety. i'm giving a presentation on friday and i am going to take some atenolol beforehand. not my prescription and i've never used it before (i know, i know. i'm willing to take that risk). i figure i'd take it about 2 hours before.

i didn't know what atenolol was so i had to look it up... my wife takes inderal for her mitral valve prolapse... it effectively controls her irregular heartbeat when they occur... inderal is a fast/short acting beta blocker, she only uses it when needed but when she takes it it kicks in pretty quick... i found out that atenolol is fast/long acting so you should be cool...

i was surprised to see that beta blockers are widely used by performers in many areas of the entertainment industry... it's gotta work if it's that widely used...

i hope you do well... let us know how you made out...

Thank you. I will let you know how it goes. I think I will try them out tomorrow first to see how they effect me. My mental anxiety gets much worse when I start shaking and sweating, so I'm hoping I can control that with the atenolol, and hopefully that will keep my mental anxiety down a bit.

A benzo would work better. Not a high dose or anything. But I doubt atenolol will do much. Good luck.

Yeah, I don't think atenolol would do that much. Let us know how it went though.

actually i didn't think so either and thought a long acting benzo might be better but wiki claims it is widely used by people in the entertainment industry to overcome performance anxiety... giving a presentation in school is a performance... atenolol is fast/long acting beta blocker which is good, he can take it whenever he wants before the presentation because it's long acting... my wife takes inderal only when she needs it for heart palpitations she gets due to her mitral valve prolapse... when these palpitations occur it brings on a mild form of anxiety in her and since inderal is a fast/short acting beta blocker it quickly relieves both symptoms... i'm very interested in seeing how this works out for him... i think this might work for him... i hope he posts on it...

Well it went quite well, I was stunned how calm I was both leading up to and especially during the speech. Normally it all starts as I get to school and begin to feel a pain in my stomach, and that seems to let me know that the anxiety is coming, and it all goes to hell from there. Physically and mentally. But that never happened. I was able to talk, I didn't stutter very much, I wasn't shaking, I could think and actually speak without having to stick to prepared ideas. I'm really happy about it, I felt so great afterwards.

I did take a lot of substances beforehand though. I don't know which did what, or if anything did anything and I just fooled myself into thinking they helped, who knows.
kratom-15 grams (take this before work a lot to give me energy and it helps to push through some milder anxiety)
tramadol-500mgs (also use it before work sometimes, though usually much lower doses. but it's effective for me, chills me out)
atenolol-100mgs (i tried it the day before my speech, i didn't notice anything, but decided to try it anyway. I took it about 2 hours before my speech)
clonazepam-4mgs (i have a script for this, and while it helps very mild anxiety on a day to day basis, it has never been effective at all at helping me when i am in situation that induces severe anxiety. i've tried it for presentations before and it has never helped. but i figured what the hell, throw some in the mix)

thanks for your support   i feel a boost of confidence and i really hope next time i can get up there with less in my system now that i have proven to myself i'm capable of doing this without being a complete mess. i think that was a major hurdle for me.

i honestly don't know anything about kratom at all but i'm very familiar with tramadol and klonopin... tramadol is a pain reliever, i don't think that played a role in your performance but i'm not familiar with any possible interactios... klonopin at 4mg is pretty high, normal dose for a severe panic attack is probably around 2mg, some people need more, some people might need less then that... klonopin is a pretty powerful benzo, when i used it, i was using 4mg's a day and i actually felt a bit sedated... it was the only benzo i used that did that to me... klonopin could definitely be the one that did the trick for you so it's hard if not impossible to judge just how effective atenolol really was... you probably could have gotten away with just the klonopin, especially at 4mg...

I have tried klonopin on its own, at very high doses, with very little effect. and tramadol hits me pretty well and does chill me out. i don't know how well it worked for this speech but it calms me down for work for sure. it's one of my favorites. klonopin has been very disappointing for me.
