Q on Plastic Tek

Hello shroomery,

although i am a new poster, i have been a long time lurker of this site and decided to finally make an account. I have read many different guides and i believe i have a solid understanding of some basic teks.

I had a question about the plastic tek here

and was wondering if instead of making those holes on the actual lid can i use tinfoil to inoculate and then cover with the lid on top of the foil?
OR
can i make a smaller hole on the actual lid to inoculate and tape over it with tyvek or micropore tape? ( i understand i also need one for GE)

i would rather do one of these if possible because i was only able to find the recommended injection ports online in bulk. it is also just inconvenient to use the silicon glue and order injection ports... etc

so please let me know what your suggestions.

As long as you have a dry verm filter on top of the brf mix, you can use foil for the lid.  All the lid is really doing is preventing or slowing the evaporation of moisture from your mix.

ive used some heavy duty foil as my lids a few times and it worked out fine. just be careful not to puncture it and you should be fine.

Why not puncture it?  You don't have a seal around the edges between foil and glass anyway.  Most guys using foil inject right through it and then don't cover the 'wounds'.  They serve as extra gas exchange.

Ya, all you need to do is make 4 holes just like the pf tek. tape them up for pressure cooking. then inoculate thru them followed by some micropore tape. No need to buy the injector ports.

Wow thanks for all the replies. So I think I'll do this. Put 2 inch? Dry Verm layer on top, use foil instead of the lid and inoculate through them and just tape it up with micropore tape.

I like this plastic tek because I can buy 1/4 1/2 and full pints and will have a gradual flow of colonized cakes. Would anyone recommend me using full plastic pints or is there something Wrong with them?

Taco is right.  When inoculating through a foil top, one must be
cautious not to push the syringe too far.  I did this once, but I just
put another layer of foil over the jar and poked smaller holes.

If you can't (or don't want to) get injection ports, you can use kitchen and bath silicone.  Put a dab on one side of the hole, push it through and spread it a bit on the other side.  This gives it an H shape so it won't pop out of the hole.  Make sure you get plain clear silicone.
