Question for the Hunter S Thompson fans
    #15335597 -

I'm a big fan myself, and absolutely loved reading Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. I'm on The Curse Of Lono now and its not nearly as good of a read.

I was just curious which of his books are the next best to Fear And Loathing. I like all of his excessive drug use and details about the drug trip. Fear And Loathing was 220 pages of that so of course I loved the read. I just saw The Rum Diary and it was kind of .... well, a dissapointment and I'd like to see if i can find a book of his thats almost as good as Fear And Loathing. Maybe The Great Shark Hunt?

Hells Angels and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 are also good reads

Hell's Angels for sure. FaL on the Campaign Trail is a little turgid, slow in parts, a little cobbled together (Thompson seems to undergo several breakdowns throughout the duration of the book).

I'm currently reading Generation of Swine: Tales of Shame and Degradation in the 80's, it's hilarious, full of the Gonzo hyperbole and ridiculous metaphors of which HST was the master. :awejeez:

Read Hell's Angels first, then Generation of Swine.

Eh, you'll probably be disappointed.

HST was primarily a political writer and a sports writer who happened to use drugs.

If you don't like politics and/or sports you probably won't find much outside of Fear and Loathing and Hell's Angels to enjoy.  Even Hell's Angels is pretty political.

Whatever I find next, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas became an instant classic for me. One of my top 5 books of all-time, easily.

"Maybe there is no Heaven. Or maybe this is all pure gibberish—a product of the demented imagination of a lazy drunken hillbilly with a heart full of hate who has found a way to live out where the real winds blow—to sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink whisky, and drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested . . . Res ipsa loquitur. Let the good times roll."

I've got a book of all his letters called The Proud Highway
It's pretty different to Fear and Loathing Las Vegas for obvious reasons.
Its kinda like a patchy autobiography told through his letters to friends family and some political figures.
Worth a read definitely.

Cool.

There is some drug use in The Curse Of Lono, but its all brief and not nearly as fun or trippy as Fear & Loathing. What an awesome book that is.

I guess the vote has it between Hell's Angels and Generation of Swine. I wish he did more work like F.A.L.I.L.V

The Great Shark Hunt is an awesome collection - Strange Rumbling in Azlatan is one of the best pieces of political commentary on the Chicano race riots ever written. F&L on the Campaign Trail
'72 basically put me on the road to graduate school for Post-WW2 US History.

It's definitely not all about the drugs - but if you're a politics junkie (like me), you'll love his stuff.

I actually found that a pretty tedious read. Written by an outsider who places himself close to the epicenter, but fails to capture the essence. Granted, there's a lot of drug use/trip descriptions in there. But boy, does that get boring after a couple of pages...
