Laziest and potentially worst First Grow ever. B+, Madbags, and Audio Receiver heat sources
    #15327961 -

I plan on doing a better grow at some point in the future, but for now I decided to go the lazy route and just improvise my way through it.

I'm using 3 madbags injected with B+ spores.

10/27/11: two 20cc Spore syringes arrive from Earth's Tongue. B+ on top and Ecuador on bottom.

10/27/11: trio of madbags injected. I probably went overboard as I used up half of the B+ syringe (about 10 or 11cc)

11/5/11: 9 days later (today) I finally see some signs of mycellium growth. Yes, they're sitting on the edge of my audio receiver for warmth. I don't have any way to check temperature but I estimate that they're sitting at a warm 85 degrees (the side sticking out being a bit cooler of course). It's probably too warm but the alternative is closer to 70 degrees, so I think I'll take my chances. I also cover them with a sweater to block sunlight during the day.

11/5/11: Closeup of one of the madbags. I noticed one or two white spots on this bag, but I'm not sure if you can see it from this pic. I'm not really sure if i'm seeing mycellium, glare from the flash, or condensation in the bag from this pic.

I plan to update this any time I see some visible progress

Sure did

I'm planning on using those Ecuador spores in another 2 mad bags I have. I'm just waiting a bit so I can use anything I learned from this first grow to make the second one go better.

Those syringes look unnaturally dark. Like it was made with a dye or something.

Here's a link explaining the "New Moon" spore syringes

http://www.earthstongue.com/site/388422/page/1875237

Whether it's unnaturally dark or not is irrelevant. If it works (which it does) then that's all that matters.

So it says that you can dump it in a bowl open air, and pour back into syringe with....No contams on the sub....then it says...do not attempt.

Idk seems fishy, there are sponsors for a reason. But goodluck dude! Im takin a seat to watch the mad bags.

There's two criteria I would use to judge the effectiveness of a spore syringe.

1) Will it grow mushrooms?

2) Is it cost effective?

Price is competitive with other vendors so 2 is satisfied. We will see in a month or so if I get mushrooms, but I don't see why not.

I'm surprised people are focusing on the syringe rather than the receiver which is probably keeping the bags too hot :mushroom2:

i would rather have it closer to 70F rather than "might be too hot".  70F is just fine.  yeah, i would rather have them a little warmer myself too but if your not too sure how hot its getting its better just to leave it at room temp.  just my 2 cents tho, good luck!

"New Moon" syringe = marketing gimmick imho who knows tho

oh yeah, what the hell is a madbag?  just a filter patch bag with sub in it?  sorry just never heard the term before...

85 degrees is way too hot, 70 degrees is very close to optimal. If it drops below that in the night, that's also perfectly okay. Don't use any kind of heat source unless your place is below 50 degrees.

You shouldn't have used so much spore solution in those bags. The more solution you use the longer it will take to colonize, and you run the risk of introducing too much water.

Still, your bags could be fine, but remove them to a place that's cooler. Optimal temp is 70-75.

optimal temp is 86F per P. Staments

but then again its better to be low than too high

RR colonized a jar at 40F just to show that it can be done

That's outdated and incorrect information. We now know that optimal temp is 70-75.

For example, according to RR:
Quote:
At 86F, growth is already slowed to a crawl, and molds are being stimulated.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12541940#12541940
Also from RR:
Quote:
By the way, Stamets never said to use 86F as an ambient air temp for colonizing P cubensis.

75F is probably about perfect for fruiting, but don't sweat it.

And one last one from RR:

My experience has been the lower temps give meatier fruits and better potency.  Shoot for normal room temp fruiting, because that's just about ideal.

Sorry to tell you brother, but your "new moon" syringes will blow donkey balls! I started with their syringes and waited 3 of them. They grew myc, but the mycelium wouldn't fruit. I also waisted about 80 1/2 pint and pint brf jars along with 5 105QT mono's of coir/verm, also waisted time on 7 liquid cultures.

All together that BS site cost me around $150 and 5 months worth of myco work.
