Central Arkansas Find. ID help Please

Hi guys. For the first time the season, I actually found some mushrooms growing. If you can help Identify them I would be very appreciative. I am going to start a file with pictures and sporeprints of the mushrooms I have collected and am confident of the ID (only shrooms with reliable prints will go into my file, but others I will ask your opinions of).

I will call this shroom A:





Spore print didn't take on those. They turned to a nasty mush. I found them in a cow field near the salt lick, but were not growing from dung that I could tell.

We will call this Shroom B:







Once again I didn't get a print from these. They didn't get all mushy like the first ones, they just didn't leave a discernable print. It was on white paper so maybe it was white spores or maybe they were too immature. I found these in the yard picked and thrown aside, so I have no idea what they were growing from or near. Possible they were growing in a potted plant.

Now for Shroom C:









As you can see I actually did get a print from this. It appeared dark purple/brown almost black. Hard to judge actually. Also the gills had a very attractive pink tinge. I found it in the lawn happily growing in the green grass.

My guesses:
A and C are Agaricus of some kind, B is a Russula I guess.

I would agree that A and C are Agaricus. Not sure on B though.

I already threw them away, I didn't suspect they were psychoactive, and even if they were, they were squirmy with larvae of some kind. I am starting a new hobby that I mentioned, and I want to collect as many specimens and get positive IDs and prints as I can for my folders regardless of being poisonous, edible or psychoactive. I am in Central Arkansas about 45 miles sw of Little Rock

Ok, A and C are Agaricus...even though the gills in A are dark brown and in C they are white/pink. Is this an age difference? How varied are Agaricus? Is Agaricus meaningful as an ID? Since I have the print from C it is the only one I am especially concerned with.

If anyone could recommend a decent but not expensive book for a newbie, that is also not too difficult to find, please do.

Agaricus have quite a few edible species. However, I wouldnt eat one which you did not properly ID yourself or had ID'ed by someone in person.

Agaricus do vary quite a bit in color. In some species, the gills will also change color through maturity.

Just a bit of infromation if you didnt know... but the white button mushrooms you buy at the supermarket are Agaricus mushrooms.

Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora is always my choice for books.

OK thanks I didn't know that about the supermarket mushrooms, but now that I think about I can see many similarities between the shrooms in A and the generic store-bought ones.

I'll try to find Mushrooms Demystified on Amazon.

So what would be the best way to label the sporeprint? Just "Agaricus"?

I got home and looking at the spore print it is definately dark brown only. There is no purple in there, I think it was a little wet when I made my first judgement. Also the squiggly lines on the print are probably larvae trails hehe :P

Aww, how cute! A lone little mushroom growing in manure.

I didn't pick this one because I don't think its ready for a spore print yet, but if anyone can make a guess on its ID go ahead. I feel fairly confident in saying its not Agaricus because I also saw some young sprouts where shrooms A were found and they start out as little balls. (Am i learning yet? hope so.  :crazy: )

That white one was growing from manure?! Hmm.. beats me. I would say Panaeolus antillarum, but it almost seems too delicate.

Indeed Angry- it seems too fragile as well- But it Has to be Antillarum, I mean- the only other possibilty is a cope which it is clearly not.

russulas grow all over arkansas and northern louisiana. i just found one today. i've found those in every area of the state, except the southeast corner of arkansas (haven't been down in that area yet). i don't know what kind of russula you found. some of them are edible and a few even taste good. a friend of mine and i found some last year up by jasper along the buffalo that the local people said they really like. we eventually ate them and found that the locals were right. the mushrooms were pretty good; they had a spicy flavor to them, almost like peppers.

The first and last mushrooms appear to be Agaricus, and the second one is definitely a Russula.

Identification to species in Russula requires a microscope in all but a few species. The spores of Russulas vary in color from white to yellowish or even somewhat orangish.

Identification in Agaricus is pretty difficult too, and it requires information about odor, bruising, and the appearance of the ring (and often some other things). There are both edible and poisonous species in the genus.

The gills of a young Agaricus can be anywhere from almost white through grays and pinks to dark brown, almost black. As the mushroom matures (the spores mature) they take on the typical deep chocolate brown color.

Identifying the spore print as an Agaricus is certainly reasonable. If you want to do what the professionals do when they don't know the species, label it as "Agaricus sp." (Agaricus species).


Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. Another book you might consider is Mushrooms of Northeastern North America by Alan E Bessette, Arleen R Bessette, and David W Fischer.

Hi all. I found a couple patches of these growing in the grass at my college, spore prints are still forming.....






Any ideas? Something tells me this is an easy ID.

I have a question about spore prints. How do you store/preserve them for long periods? I know they won't remain viable forever, but I want to preserve them for posterity. I noticed that they rub away easily, and I wish to have them in a journal (3 ring binder).

I'd imagine that they are some sort of Clitocybe. Do they have any smell to them? And, what is that they are growing from?

Im still looking for a positive ID. Get back to us on the sporeprint color.

I usually print my mushrooms on foil. I'll then fold in half, and then fold up the edges, and store in a plastic baggie. This preserves the print color and spores.

I did a little research and had decided myself that they are clitocybe, but haven't found an exact match yet. The smell was standard mushroom smell, but less pleasant. I'll smell them again after class. I'll learn to pay more attention to smell in the future. Thanks for the spore advice, that sounds like the way to go. I was imagining preserving the print also but oh well hehe :smile:

I don't really know what to say as a description of what they were growing in. Seems to be generic lawn, with lots of weeds in there.

I think I found it. They are Common Funnel Cap (Clitocybe Infundibuliformis) that's a mouth full!
