Mushroom Weather in West Central Florida (ID?)
    #1402964 - 03/23/03 09:51 AM (20 years, 6 days ago)

Here is a two pictures of a Mushroom I found coming up in my backyard today that I figured I would share with you. Being just pictures from the top it isn't all that exciting. With all this rain and good weather I imagine there will plenty more in the very near future. i don't reall need an ID on this, even tho I have no idea what it is. There was only one of these growing near a gutter downspout. This mushroom is all cap. the cap is about an inch and a half in diameter, and about 1 inch high. The bottom of the cap is only about a quarter of an inch off of the ground, therefore I was unable to even see the stem or gills to be able to take a picture. This mushrooom reminds me of some kind of button mushroom you would buy in the store. It was late in the evening when I took these pictures, so I will go out in the morning and see if it has grown any to try and get some kind of profile shots. There is only one lone mushroom here and I was wondering if tomorrow I go and pick it to try and get a spore print and better pictures to be able to ask for a proper ID, if it may be detrimental to its reproductive cycles?

In the first picture it resembled a "Sand Amanita" (Amanita baccata). However I am unsure what it really is. Probably a species of Amanita.

If you wanted a positive ID, you would want to pull it out of the ground and see what the base of the mushroom looked like.

Well.. i wasn't sure if i really even wanted an Id, but..Its starting to shrivel a little.. so I will charge my batterys for my camera and I will go and get it in a little bit a take some more pics and take a spore print..I was just kind of worried about..ruining its cycle of life because it seems to be the only one in my yard..

Ok..if you look at the stem you will see orange... above that you will see where I pinched it... it seems to bruise yellowish... the orange part of the stem is natural..I have several more pictures I will upload when I can due to my limit..I am currently printing the cap..This mushroom was growing in very sandy soil..So..I guess I need an ID ..Thanks..If I forgot to mention anything in this post and my previous ones please let me know..

Your mushroom is from the genus Agaricus, the same genus as the mushrooms you buy at the grocery.

The next thing we need to know is what it smells like. Try smelling around the base of the stem and where the stem joins to the cap. If there is little or no smell, try crushing the base of the stem with your fingers and try again.

Also, please let us know how big it is. The photos, although of excellent quality, don't tell me this.

As noted above, great photos. We'll be waiting to hear from you.

Happy mushrooming!

Well I crushed the stem and it dosen't really smell like anything except maybe slightly woody.. but I smelled the cap and it smells extremely mushroomy..Also I tries to print the cap.Looks like it may have dropped a small ammount of brown spores. I can't say for sure, because I picked the cap up an there was very small maggot looking creatures coming from the gills so I tossed it.

Because you mentioned that it bruised yellow, it should have had an odor either nasty (like phenol or library paste or ink or metallic) or sweet (like almond extract). I have found that not everybody can smell the nasty smell, so we will guess that that is the odor (it could have been faint). Going with that, this mushroom would be a relative of Agaricus xanthodermis (but it is not that species). These are the main poisonous species in the genus - they cause gastric upset (vomiting, diarrhea).

Agaricus are fairly difficult to identify accurately to species. To get the odor it generally helps to have a young, fresh specimen.

Happy mushrooming!

Yes it was not young and had started to dry somewhat.. I did completely crush up the stem in my hand and from the stem at least there was no mushroom smell whatsoever..So I will keep an eye out for more of these and try to find a fresher one to obtain a scent from.. Thanks
