Mom's getting 6 inches of lower intestine removed, some type of cancer

Went for some colon checkup randomly, turns out she has some cancer near her colon in her intestinal track, the docs aren't worried but now she's getting 6 inches removed within the next 2 weeks, talk about a crap surprise. They said she wont be shittin into a bag though which is good, they don't seem too worried.

Anyone had some intestinal track removed?  Is this a big deal or no? I assume she's going to be down for a while?  I am going to have a tough time aging if I recieve her and my dad's issues.

My guess is they're removing some polyps.

It's pretty routine.  My mom had a few inches taken out around 5-6 years ago.

I had a friend that had blocked/twisted intestine at a very young age (around 5).  They removed it and he has a large scar but otherwise gets along just fine.  He played sports all through high school and is pretty smart.  Not that an intestine effects your smarts, but I'm sure she'll be fine.  Wishing her the best of luck :thumbup:

She'll be alright. Month and a half recovery and she'll be good as new.

As long as no intestinal content leaks into her body cavity she should be alright. The worst thing is leakage which causes a severe systemic shock basically your body reacts extremely violently to the detected bacteria and somehow manages to kill itself.

Something like that. A change in the diet is always a good thing. No more alcohol or fried meat or any of that colon cancer bomb stuff. Lots of fruit and veg should be sound :yesnod:

Fried red meat is the worst and alcohol is hardly any help, in fact its quite good if colon cancer is your ultimate goal.

Through my studies of molecular biology I became quite aware of how important seemingly trivial stuff like proper diet and sleeping pattern are. Processed foods and preservatives are stuff you should actively avoid which is prolly obvious but w/e.

And thats not something new. Its been known for a long time that meat consumption is highly correlated with colon cancer development. Also how frequently do you take a shit? The more your shit stays inside of you the more carcinogens are fed to your colon cells so you get the idea. I'm writing this post and taking a shit in the same time btw :lol:

damn. cos i eat alot of fried meat, both white and red, cos its got protein and all that. and thats pretty much the only way to eat meat more or less, its always fried, even in a range of different dishes and varieties of those type of dishes.


i try to eat a decentish diet, but yeah, i really don't have the most balanced diet, very protein and carb heavy at the moment, not many veggies, etc.

i also eat a fair ammount of food with preservatives as well i think, i.e. canned tuna (again protein), cured meats like prosciutto, packaged meat like bacon, canned curry paste, bottle pasta sauce, pickled olives in jars, all of the above probably packed full of preservatives. :/


i wonder if you have any ideas for good protein sources that are not potentially carsinogenic?? i'm almost certain the artificial protein powders are not any better then natural food sources.


i also have some disturbed sleeping patterns, i generally sleep really well, like for 8-9-10 hours, but i go through patterns of keeping strange hours and periods of jetlag/all nighters to fix my sleeping patterns. i'm not too bad with sleeping though thankfully.


i shit all the time though which is good atleast. multiple shits a day usually :highfive:

This shouldn't be a big deal. My Grandma who is 80 and not in the best shape had a blockage in her intestine, and had to get about 6 inches surgically removed. It took her about 2 months to recover fully.

My mom had to have almost all of her small intestine removed due to ulcerative colitis, and she shits in a bag now. She turned out fine too :shrug:

Don't think in terms of how much energy and protein you need. The more you force your cells to do shit the faster you're going to burn out and die. It has been proven for sometime now that caloric restriction significantly prolongues the life span of a number of organisms ranging from yeast, worms, flies, fish and mice so its gotta be true for us as well. Look up the mTOR pathway.

Seriously try to eat more fresh stuff. I partly blame my gf for pointing me in the right direction. When we first met and went shopping out together my side of the cart would be full of the most awful, cancer, heart attack and diabetes inducing shit you could imagine. Now I'm not some sort of a health freak but I do try to take care of myself. You can start by getting some garlic and broccoli (very good for you colon :borat:)

well it's cos i'm currently doing alot of gym work, so i need to get a good ammount of protein and carbs into me. but like when it comes to steak and chicken and all that, pretty much everyway you can prepare them is fried. i mean whos going to boil a steak or chicken breast sort of thing.


i guess i just have to re-jig my diet and sort out some good foods that are fresh, but still taste good and are healthy. hmm.


i eat a tonne of garlic though which is good, might start eating more brocolli too.
