The article just states it doesn't need to be done each meal, which it doesn't, just like carbs or fruit. That's the only issue with vegetarianism is that you're not getting all your EAAs, and it needs to be supplemented. I do love my meats though, especially wild game, and would take a natural meat over store bought any day, only problem is getting enough for the year is almost impossible.

You are kidding right? It specifically states "As long as you eat a variety of plant foods, such as brown rice, corn, nuts, seeds, whole grains and wheat within each 24 hour period, your protein needs should easily be met."

Potatoes and corn have complete proteins, same with many types of beans, tofu, grains. In fact you can have a perfectly balanced vegan diet with complete exclusion of gluten containing grain products.... Using only fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts an extremely healthy life can can be lived and all EAAs can be taken in. If someone were to be eating in a natural environment and not washing all the good bacteria off of everything they ate b12 supplementation would not be necessary either.... ( this is still possible in todays society though some research would go into finding an environment where it could be done, I will probably research it at some point)

I am not vegan, I have tried it for a period of time, and will return to the lifestyle when I can afford it.

I'm no discrediting or arguing against it, but this is what I got from it:

"Plant proteins tend to be limited in one or more essential amino acids. For example, beans are low in the amino acid lysine, while rice is rich in lysine."

"It was once believed that complementary proteins had to be consumed at every meal. We now know that intentional combining at each meal isn't necessary."

Just like I don't have to eat a fruit amd veggie with every meal. You could get 1000g of protein in within a day, but unless they're complete or complimented with the EAAs, they're for naught. Yes as long as you eat all those foods that compliment in EAAs you're good, but you need to "supplement" your EAAs with the other veggies.

For me it's as easy as eating a filet of salmon or chunk of steak.

Ahhh that is where I got confused, I thought you meant take a protein supplement.... Personally I would not call eating different types of vegetables supplementation, even though that is how they phrased it in the article.... I would call it eating a balanced diet .

Also, I like meat as much as the next guy but when I eat vegan and make sure to get all my nutrients I actually feel stronger and faster and I can definitely concentrate better.

I've found that when I eat veggies it does the same, but for some reason I eat tons of "heavy" dense foods, but I am balancing with a salad every other day lol. That's why America is so god damned fat, nobody easts veggies any more lol. I have always thought of doing a strictly veggie diet (with protein shakes and fresh eggs) for like like 2 weeks, but the real goal would be to keep eating salads, and not stinking too horribly lol.

Like I tried to say... ignore all of these posts. Unless you are a super health nut and are actually going to go out of your way to supplement all this shit, don't worry about ANY of it. Just eat well rounded and you are fine. If you are sketching on it, get almond or soy milk, the one I like specifically is fortified in b12, E,D. I love discussions on vitamins but this will wind up into a huge lame electronic fight. The only time Ive ever seen someone actually going through with getting total necessary nutrients (when going vegan or vegetarian) is when that person was  conscious about the nutrients BEFORE the switch. Drink that almond milk, eat what you want and you are straight bro. I promise. I used to hang out at an collective house where I met (literally) probably over 30-40 vegans over the course of a few years. In that house I was hangning around a few "raw" vegans. That means you only eat raw vegetables and thats it. No soy milk or fortified shit or anything of the sort. And they are some healthy motherfuckers. I still know a good handful. Ive seen it first hand.  No worries mang !

Nutrition is a bitch. I plan on taking a nutrition class here at the college next semester. I'm pretty excited for it. It seems like everyone has their own little facts on nutrition. I never know what to believe :lolsy:

The amount of B12 needed in the diet is insanely small.  There are a few non-animal sources of the vitamin, including some specialized yeast strains.  A vegetarian will be hard pressed not to get enough B12 due to all of the B12 fortified foods on the market.  Try finding bread or breakfast cereal that is not B12 fortified.

vitamin b12 is produced by bacteria and added to nutritional yeast making it a fortified product, its not produced by them. fortification of bread and cereal products depends on the country you live in. in australia non organic bread is commonly fortified with other B vitamins (thiamin and folic acid) and iodine but not b12.

Part of the reason things about nutrition are so hard to believe is because there is a large amount of fake information released. Even fake studies sponsored by companies, like the studies for milk... Also the food pyramid messes up a lot of people perceptions of a healthy diet early on.

Anatomy and physiology is a great course for basic understanding of body processes and functions. I definitely learned more than I thought I would, and would really like to continue by taking a nutrition course and what not. Maybe become a snake oil salesman!

They undoubtedly can get enough protein if they know how to do it right;
  • Seitain (protein made from wheat gluten)
  • Tempeh (made from soy beans with a mycellial mat)
  • tofu(not the best source, but one nonetheless)
  • TVP(textured vegetable protein)
  • hemp protein
  • pea protein
  • nuts, seeds and legumes
  • also any milks made of the items above (hemp milk, almond milk, etc)
  • whey(if not vegan)

actual vegetables are great but IMO it's essential to supplement with some of the things above...
