Some guy says my Internet WiFi can transfer faster than what my modem recieves?!?
    #15034363 -

Alright, If you know computers I need your help.

My parent have been having speed problems with my internet so I called their provider.

The problem is, They supposed to get 7 Mbps, they only receive 0.3 . Super slow....

So I called this technician and he argued that the real speed of my Internet cannot be determined from the Wifi, only from direct connection to the modem... Everything if fine up to now.

I try to explain that the speed I get from the WiFi is like 1% of what I get from direct connection. Then he starts arguing again that its unreliable. I try my best to explain that I never use the fucking cable and only the Wifi....

After a good half hour of bullshit he says something that I didn't quite understand (know if its even possible)

He says:  you Wifi can either send 1% or 300% of what I get from direct cable connection... (random numbers but he specified I could get above 100% of what direct connection can give me)

So if I understood him correctly.  I bought a 7 Mbs connection from the company, and my WiFi could send me speeds of like 20 Mbps????

To me thats seems impossible, cause my Wifi would be sendinng more information than it recieves...

Was this guy full of shit or is it really possible for a WiFi to send faster speeds than what it receives from the provider???????

Doesn't really make sense to me but I'm not an expert...

seemed like you were arguing with a person and eventually he said some shit to end it and shut you up?

It doesn't really make sense.

Full of shit, a 100 percent of something is all there is you can't magically turbocharge your 7mb connection

Yes exactly

Arguing with a guy from Bell in fucking Tunesia...

The bitch could not give me a fucking answer...

Do you know computers enough to confirm that its total bullshit though???

Your bandwidth is a limit imposed by the company you deal with, the only way your gonna get a better connection is if you pay for it.

Not exactly bullshit.  Lets say you have an internet connection of 7MB/s and a home media network going through your wifi router.  While the internet connection will never exceed the 7MB/s your media streaming will be capable of the max that the router is capable of (most likely 54MB/s (over 700% of your internet connection)).

So if you have slow speeds on wifi but regular speed directly from the modem you need a new wifi router.

What?

He said the guy said he could get more out of his connection, by using his WiFi.

Essentially being like you get 100% from being plugged directly into the modem, but with the WiFi you will get 300%.

So if I have a moden that runs 5 mph max (fuck it.) and a router that can go 20mph... and I plug my modem into the router my connection will magically be running at 20mph?

I think What he meant is that a WiFi can be used to send more than just the internet. You internet would go at 5 Mbps max. The rest of the thing you could use your WiFi for will go a 54 Mbps (which is pretty standard max speed for most WiFi boxes).

Example, my printers uses my Wifi to connect to my laptop. I have no wires connecting my laptop to my printer, its all wireless

No the guy said that his router is capable of higher speeds than the plan provides.  So if the tech tests your connection and gets the speed the plan provides, but your computer doesn't than the problem exists with your privately owned router and not the ISPs leased modem and thus can't provide support.

Yeah Patlel you get it.

I still recieve only 2 Mbps when plugged in directly in the modem with a cable. Far from the promised 7...

In that case call them back and order a new modem.  The tech must hoave not understood your problem.

That motherfucker argued with me for half an hour that in order to measure the speed right I need the cable the company supplied and not any other cable...

:huxleyfacepalm:

Will there be a difference once I get the company cables? 99% no...

No difference. Have some pity on him though, he can only follow the script provided by his employers.

Yeah, the cable shouldn't matter, very rarely does the construction of a wire have a noticeable effect on data transfer.

Now that you've done the trouble shooting call them up and ask for a new modem.  They may test your connection again (if the guy even did that to begin with) and if they give you any guff threaten to change providers, they'll  overnight a new modem to you.
