Why hasn't the internet been made illegal yet?

Seriously... I'm suprised the U.S. government (for one) hasn't taken more steps to outlaw the spread of free and unrestricted information.
I mean, the Patriot Act is mostly bullshit and all, but it hasn't reached a level where they can single places like the Shroomery out, (yet...) The day it does though, you better be prepared to kneel and suck Big Brother's fat meat-stick!

the final revision of the patriot act was something like 3013 pages, and they were given the draft one hour before voting. Who knows what they slipped in on page 1464. I wonder if this is in:
SECTION 102 states clearly that any information gathering, regardless of whether or not those activities are illegal, can be considered to be clandestine intelligence activities for a foreign power. This makes news gathering illegal.

no offense, but that's the dumbest thing i have ever heard
the internet is/was a crucial part in human evolution, simply because its allows the free and unrestricted spread of information, communication has been changed forever due to this "global network"
its not going anywere soon

Yea I hear ya, but the main thing is that it was created by the millitary, they can shut the net down Im sure. But why when they can use it to monitor an ever more internet dependent society with ease. They can peer into you PC and see what you have been up to, and monitor all your net activities etc. Its great for them and us...sort of...

They can't shut down the net, but i'm sure they could find a way to shut down sites such as these. They could be considered to be aiding and abetting a crime. They may find a way to do it some day.

After reading that article summarizing the Patriot ACT I & II, I bet they COULD shut down the net.. but what they would more likely do is shut down sites like the shroomery and other such informative sites, but allow commercial sites to remain...more money, more power, more power, more money

I work with computers and am majoring in computer science with a minor in software development, I also have been know to do a little white hat hacking. So this here is the deal on the internet; next year internet 2 is coming out, im not making that up by the way, internet 2 will have NO commercial sites and will have only educational material, so it's basically for schools, the bad thing about it is its gonna be pushed on people because it will be cheaper but will have regulations. So when internet 2 comes out, after a few years if it takes off, the FBI will have less restrictions on what they can block on the old internet. the CIA (www.cia.gov) has already started making restrictions, they are now monitoring yahoo chat rooms with yahoos knowledge, they claim to be doing it to find terrorists. So this is the very first step in the loss of online freedom. DO NOT worry about anyone monitoring this site, as long as you dont say that youre gonna bomb something your fine. I remember last year i played a video game(that came out in 96') where the government made a new internet and banned the old one (sound familiar?) regardless, a bunch of nerd hacker teenagers found some old internet cables and materials and started their own illegal service that was hardwired throughout america..So yes, the internet will eventually be fully monitored and sites like this will be shut down, BUT not for a long, long, long time.

yup, The plan is to phase out this internet, and bring in Internet 2. You can look it up, bascially its being designed with high security in mind, security in favour of big brother of course. You will have no security with internet 2. On the bright side it will be waaay faster.. just its not going to be the same. Lots of restrictions.
So we're going to have to keep this one alive.. maybe we'll have the underground internet heh..
