That is a great size, plenty of room for cakes and casings. I use the same size and it works great. I use an air pump and 2 lines. One line just goes to a "T" and just pumps in fresh filtered air, the other goes to another "T" connecting another airhose around the base of the hardware cloth stand with holes drilled into the hose to "bubble" fresh air and help with humidity. I use about 1 1/2" perlite and 3/4" of water/peroxide. 4:1 Water eroxite

The large tub-$7.00 small tub-$3.00 hardware cloth-$2.00 air hose (2@8')-$2.00 air pumps (2)-$26.00 Timer for airpumps-$5.00 filter (True HEPA)-$16.00 (filter discs can be used, $1.00 each) "T's" (2)-$2.00 perlite(2 bags)-$5.00 silicone to attach filters/discs and lid of sm. tub-$3.00 weather stripping for lid of lg tub-$1.00 60cc syringe to refill water(just use as a funnel to the hose going to the rack-$2.00Thats about $74.00 or so (all prices rounded up) add another large tub for $7 and you have all the supplies for two automated growing chambers. With this setup, I can ignore my chambers for 4-7 days at a time. I haven't found a need for a light with the clear sides and white top, but I live alone and dont have to be descrete. It's not real cheap, but it is automated, simple and it WORKS!!! ------------------ -ChesterCopperpott-

left a few things out on the price list there... mostly one time purchases for newbies, but not all... between the humidity guage, spores, jars, substrate, pressure cooker, dust mask, rubber gloves, and any other miscellanious stuff ya need, you're looking at almost another hundred bucks... well, sixty or seventy if you're thrifty and pick up a pressure cooker at good will.. aGENT oRANGE, You are correct, in as far as the whole growing project. But the title was "terrarium" so that is the info I gave. As you can see from this pic, there are many expenses involved with our wonderful hobby. It is just a matter of how far you want to get involved. ------------------ -ChesterCopperpott-

You should crumble and case those lumps. Plus, rather than running your air lines directly from the pump to your area run them through a "bong" system, where water is used to enrich the air with essentials. Nice materials though. I did the same with opaque containers enclosed with a plexi custom lid. Try the "Bong" it works..... ShaPiPe-

Perlite set up properly does not need any EXTRA humidity (from a bong setup) and plus that reduces airflow. Casings do not do well at 98% humidity like cakes do, they do best at around 90-93%.

Hey Chester did you die? Your e-mail no longer works...How many bags of perlite did you need for the bottom (I have that big tub, and one 8 quart bag, I want about 1.5 inches and then 3/4 inches of water...) Also, I instead of putting the air pumps in a seperate box and making a filter, couldn't I just have H2O2 in the perlite and bubble the tubes through the standing water/H2O2 in the bottom? What syringes are good to get btw?

No, I'm alive. I sent you an email. And your filter discs should be there tomorrow.I use 2 bags (8 qt) of perlite from walmart per terrarium. I strain mine through a colander to get rid of the small pieces and dust so I won't end up with "mud" in the bottom. ( you can place used perlite in a bucket with bleach water afterwords to sterilize and then dry out in oven in a deep roasting pan.) Also, I do use H2O2 in my water/perlite mix usually about a 4:1 ratio. Haven't had ANY problem with contams, but I am also very paranoid and take extra measures. ie. HEPA filters, flow hood, HEPA filtered glove box, bleach, germ-x, etc. it all pays off.
