Terranium
    #2013077 - 10/16/03 12:23 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hi everyone, you can call me a newbie if you want, but I've been learning about cultivating mushrooms for 4 years, I just have no personal experience, but it's about time now, as for the question....
I'm pretty familiar with everything PRE-COLONIZATION, but once the jars are ready to be colonized they go in a terranium, I know this, my question pertains to a certain terranium. Based on the faqs, teks, and various info. I've read about terranium making, I understand that the 2 factors in getting a good terranium is that the terranium has to retain moisture, & be airtight. Well, today a friend of mine picked up what he thinks would be a good idea for the terranium
It's sold as a "greenhouse" for plants. It's 10 inches high, couple feet long, & a foot and a half or so wide. One of the things It says on side of greenhouse is that it "RETAINS HUMIDITY", but being a greenhouse it's plexiglass (clear), transparant, but I've heard of people using terraniums like this one, and just using some kind of duct tape or electrical tape and taping all 4 sides of terranium, Is this for humidity's sake? or to keep it airtight? or to keep no light from getting in? It's big enough to hold the rice cakes once they come out of their jars, but does this sound efficient to everyone?

Also, I've noticed in various teks, it is said that when you are misting/spraying in the terranium that water should not be deliberatly, directly applied to the mushrooms themselves, now will it prove to be a fatal mistake for the mushrooms if the spraying accidently does touch the mushrooms? or does it just mean keep direct spraying of the mushrooms to a minimum?
I'm asking because If any mist whatsoever is applied to mushrooms directly and they could die, then I would be more comfortable with using perlite to humidify the terranium, in which case that perlite would be used, does it then require minimal misting/spraying, or no spraying whatsoever??

Misting directly on the mushrooms wont hurt them, but its not reccomended. I believe direct misting causes smaller fruits, but dont quote me on that. Also, even if you use perlite, you will still have to spray. How do you plan on exchanging the air? Maybe you can turn that mini greenhouse into a Poor Mans Pod.

Tremor, maybe he doesnt speak english?

search for poor mans pod. it sounds like you'd be able to use the "mini greenhouse" that you bought for it.

I knew some smartass would say something about the misspelling of terranium. Oh yeh, you also need to capitalize first letter of sentence, and put a period at end of sentence.

Is it smart to misspell it deliberately then?

Terrarium. Say it with me.

Now, moving on. After you innoculate your jars you put them in an incubator. At this time they will colonize your substrate. If you're doing a brown rice flour and vermiticulite cake (aka. PF Tek) you will put it in a terrarium to induce fruiting.

An incubator should have a temperature at about 80 to 90 degrees, close to 84-86. You don't really need an incubator if you can find a place that will keep your jars at that temperature while also in a dark environment.

For a fruiting chamber (or terrarium), it needs to have a high humidity (100%) with lower temperatures. I think it's around 70 to 80 degrees. I forget the numbers. You want light to shine through, since light induces pinning.

Anyone more educated care to answer this misting/spraying questions?

Also, as someone earlier said, look up the Poor Man Pod on here. That makes for a good terrarium.

I guess those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.  Sorry

At least I didn't jump all over him like the previous posters.
