How bad is common black mold, really?  Will someone for sure notice if they have some, or is there only danger in severe cases?

I'm just wondering because I have an in ground/unpaved cellar that probably has some fucked up stuff in it.  I only go into it about once a month and can't imagine actually ridding it of everything growing in there and unsure if a situation like that could be an issue if there is some black mold in there.  I've been fine for a long time, but it might just be lurking, waiting.

Symptoms of Stachybotrys (aka Black Mold) exposure in humans

Exposure to the mycotoxins present in Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra can have a wide range of effects. Depending on the length of exposure and volume of spores inhaled or ingested, symptoms can manifest as chronic fatigue or headaches, fever, irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and throat, sneezing, rashes, and chronic coughing. In severe cases of exposure or cases exacerbated by allergic reaction, symptoms can be extreme including nausea, vomiting, and bleeding in the lungs and nose.

Not the kind of thing you want to fudge on. You can view black mold as the equivalent of a violent black man on PCP in your house, with the severity of the mold being equivalent to the size of dose said violent black man is on.

So, at least it will be entertaining?

It's not the type of thing to infect you and lay dormant though right?  If it's affecting a person they will see symptoms soon, or can it be something that builds up in a persons system for a cumulative effect

If its a flat/smooth ceiling - simply wash it off with a potent water/bleach solution and then paint over with Killz or other concrobium paint.

If its textured, you can do the same, but you will need to spray the bleach on and then delicately roll the ceiling using a rough surface roller sleeve.

Ideally, you want to remove the affected drywall, treat the inside with bleach or mold control and then replace the patch with new drywall, seal prime and paint...

I mitigate mold often at my job.

Fair enough, to have it and not address it is a sign of laziness.

However, to the fellow's credit, i work daily in nice homes which have mold. Infact, i would say most of the homes i've lived in and almost all that i work in that are of any age, have some mold IN the walls.

Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean its not there.

stop the problem from reoccurring, even the antifungal paints loose
effectiveness over time and is completely worthless once it's painted over
which is every few years if the bathroom isnt vented

Pris, he already mentioned that he opens the window.

An exhaust van is an excellent idea, but probably highly unlikely, especially if he is a renter.

The anti mold paint WILL conceal the mold inside the wall in my experience for at least a few years, i can't speak beyond that from personal experience.

I don't have an exhaust fan in my bathroom, the only time I've had mold is when I had 3' of water in the house for a month. Just leave the door open when it's not in use.

he's having a mold issue though due at least in part to the humidity, given
that he's a renter it's an issue he should address with the landlord

Problem is, those damn exhaust fans never seem to work, just make an awful racket.  At least the ceiling mounted varieties I am familiar with.


I'm about to go hit my bathroom ceiling and upper walls with a bleach damp sponge mop.  I live in the PNW and the mold reality is a real bummer,  I recently visited Montana and my first morning there I noticed all my luggage smelled moldy.  There are parts in my house where the smell of mold is slightly noticable but not my bedroom.  Yet all my stuff picked up this smell.  It worries me.  I don't know if I can escape it by moving or if the level of mold/mildew/mustiness I'm experiencing is just a given in this shitty, damp environment.
