Too Little Moisture in home-made BRF
    #1494483 - 04/26/03 12:06 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, the guy that delivers my mail has a cousin who is trying to grow some B+. He has never done this before, and in fact could not have defined mycology a month ago.

He told me of this problem: In his area, he found no readily available source of BRF for his PF-style verm/brf cakes. He ground his own from natural brown rice, but when he mixed his substrate, he didn't add the 1.5 tbsp of extra water per cake to accomidate his home-ground flour, as per MMGG.

This oversight was not realized until after innoculation. His concern is whether he'll even get a flush out of his cakes.

Four days later, there is a very fine fuzz (mycellium?) just starting on the bottom of a couple of his jars.

Long story short, will this poor fellow be set back the delivery time of another syringe? (He didn't order any extra)

-Seiko

Yes, he did mention that.  He boiled them for an hour. (again as per MMGG)  Then, of course, let them cool for a few hours before innoc'ing.

He's not worried about contams (knock on wood) as much as he is about the moisture in the cake.

He has no expierience, so this could be a mountain out of a mole-hill, He just wants to be sure everything is (as much as possible) on track.

Thanks for the quick response!

-Seiko

PS - I'm curious: If, hypothetically, there is a lack of moisture, would injecting distilled water into the cake help that?  I can't think what it would hurt, but I am even less knowledgable than the bloak growing the things.

If I had a camera that worked, I'd post some pictures for him, but I don't.

There aren't any visible water droplets on the walls of the jars, save the innoculation sites. Inside, it's not very mushy at all.

I'm starting to worry.

Probably the best idea. Guess he should order a couple more syringes and buy some more jars just to be safe...

The incubator is full already...guess I'll find a nice 80-degreeish place for them.

Thanks for the time and expertise
