>a 3 quart wbs bag or rye bag soaked simmered and pc-ed will not be much lighter or will it? No but water will be retained MUCH better in grains and the substrate being packed down is not as much of an issue. If you talk to some of the people who are greats of cakes and pull HALF OUNCE off a SINGLE cake fruited noramlly, just dunked and rolled and double end cased, they will tell you they get their water content PERFECT and substrate not packed down at all. Very important!
>The nutrients in pf cakes arent that bad and giving potent mushrooms. It was not a comparison between (potency of) brf and bulk was it? The point was this person comes talking of purchasing bulk amounts of the worst substrate for growing shrooms. Yeah sure the PF Tek is great, doesnt contam easy, fun, can get some decent shrooms off them but its STILL inferior to whole grains and bulk, especially in large amounts if you have a pc. The first response was to look into more bulk methods and he snapped like he knew what the fuck he was doing when he obviously didnt and if he has a PC and is wanting bulk then there is EVERY reason (especially doing bags) to look into other methods.
>edit: aint gonna try it anyway but was just wondering why 2 pounds of verm/brf will give water content probs and 2 pounds of hydrated wbs/rye (with *some* verm) wont. It's mainly the compacting down. PF substrate is EASILY packed to tight. The light fluffy packings is how you see the cakes with the incredible shrooms all over them along with perfect water content.

Well I am trying some birdseed now in addition to BRF and verm. Sorry about my comments before, it was early in the morning for me.

Yow "Scatty"!
Agreed on the packing. Packing teh substrate (brf/verm) slows colonising down if not making impossible. But one doesnt HAVE to pack it when loading it in bags? Or is it automaticly packed more by the weight? Hmz believe you already said that. Maybe thats the reason that larger then half pint isnt adviced.
Ok, just spawned 1,5 quart of Orissa WBS to some 70/30 straw/poo. I posted somewhere yesterday that I will step away from the cakes, skip the 100% grain casings. Will do straw and straw/poo only I think. Good way to add volume to substrate also.
Might do a cake or 2 once in a while for making a quick flush for a sporeprint or sumtin.
O and, my clone is working! I mean, no contam and the whole bottom of teh jar is myc now with much rhizo!
(it is growing on my own "agar a la MF", a mix of BRF,LME and water! On the bottom of "petri a la MF" a 100cc jar of babyfood.. )

Wild bird seed rocks! and you can find it almost anywhere. If you still want to go for tons of BRF, the blend up lots of brown rice.

Original questions, get brown rice in bulk and grind it yourself. Order verm by the cubic yard if you can't find it locally.
To all the other giberish in the thread. Man! 1. Yes BRFV can be done in bags 2. No there are no problems with weight squeezing moisture or anything like it 3. In fact there are no problems at all that I can think of or have run across with BRFV in bags.
Why would you want to? 1. You may want to fruit in the spawn bag to produce spores and fruits for printing/cloning/spore mass inoculum etc.
2. You may want to fruit in the bag for ease and lack of contam risk
3. You may prefer BRFV as a spawn. No, forget what you heard, grain isn't always better. Anybody remember that pulverising BRFV in a blender/foodprocesser can yield spawn run times of only 48 hours, even at miniscule spawn rates? Refer to QT, nan, oldtimer etc if you haven't. And forget substituting grain in the tek, you can't do it.
4. BRFV isn't so lacking in nutrients as to cause problems. Yes it is less nutrient dense than most whole grains, and if that really bothers you just use fat free milk in place of the water for your pf mix. Check the math if you want but this "horrible" substrate will now have a virtually identical nutrient profile to most whole grains.
5. Steam Sterilization! This is important. Not just for the noob that doesn't have a PC either. It's a lot easier to rig up a big steam pasteurizer than a huge autoclave. If one needed lots of spawn prepared it'd be a hell of a lot easier to be able to super pasteurize BRFV with steam in one larege container rather than run a hundred loads in a pressure cooker. Search for relevant posts on steam pasteurizing if you've never thought of it.
In the end, there are many reasons why one might wish to use BRFV substrate. FOAF's probably grown out some 50 bags of the stuff over the years. All for good reason. Give the beginning expert a break.
And just to toss it back at you agar, given your expertise, why haven't you thought of any of the above mentioned benefits?

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
