Kast I am thinking that this is a quick and easy way of adding more moisture to the substrate, after it has fully colonizes you case just like any other jar.
bmmagic adding BRF might lead to contamination, however it might be worth a try, you might be able to add some peatmoss or some potting soil in small amounts for extra nutrition.
This is almost like casing, except instead of creating layers, you just put it in a container and shake.

You can probibly do it with BRF cakes too just break them up into tiny peices.

I would imagine the extra handling would increase the possibility of contaminants despite the use of vermiculite. With the advent of dunking and rock-solid proof that water doesn't "hurt" the mycelium, you could accomplish the same by dunking the cake as a whole and then casing. BUT, this is unnecessary, as a properly moistened casing and a humid environment will provide optimum moisture.

I think that this would be better than dunking, the mycellium will have direct access to the water the whole time, not just when it is being dunked in the water. I don't think that there is any increase in contamination risk either. This is basically the same thing that people do to grow bulk, except instead of using straw, dung or compost you are using vermiculite. You might me able to add some dirt or peatmoss in small amounts to add some nutrients. Since mushrooms are 90% water adding the vermiculite should give you more mushrooms. The subsrate is very nutritious by it self, and water is what limits the amount of mushrooms that can be produced, thats why we case.
So why not add even more water before casing by adding vermiculite.

Spawning bulk substrates is a bit different but I do see your point. I guess the only thing I can say is to try it and see what happens.

Yeah I agree spawning on bulk is different, but this utilizes the same basic idea.

Utilizes the same basic idea but you might as well do bulk if your going through all that. Good idea though. But your plan would give you alot more spawn for bulk substrates. Someone talked of utilizing perlite (same thing your doing) except their only purpose was to double the spawn. You have a good plan. You wouldn't need to be as sterile as grain to grain transfers. If you used a highly nutritious starting grain you might be able to do the process twice and end up w/ four times the starting ammount the starting ammount. But if this works you might just be able to mix the damp verm w/ the substrate when you case.
GREAT IDEA. Write back soon on your results.
