Sounds like I might be on the right track to what you like, I'll dig around later and come up with more suggestions.

You from Texas by any chance?  Just asking because FTM formed just down the road from my hometown.

Porcupine Tree is one of the best progressive rock bands around today, if you havent heard of them check them out. They are huge in Europe, not so much in the USA. You like Periphery? Do you have their instrumental version of their album its fuckin AWESOME not having that faggot singer. Theres soooo many good bands on Sumerian Records with them like Conducting from the Grave, Born of Osiris (my favorite).. Francesco Artusato project is fuckin SICK!

the new All Shall Perish cd is fucking CRAZY, that Artusato guy is so good at guitar.. check out The Human Abstract they are good..

heres some bands

Protest the Hero (SO FUCKING SICK! you will probably love this)
Between the Buried and Me (my favorites)
Sea of Treachery
Disarmonia Mundia (just like Soilwork, great melodic death)
Threat Signal

tryin to stay away from that cookie monster death metal vox.. heres some Protest the Hero

I'm not extremely into metal, but I like some of it.

I enjoy these guys, particularly this song.

DEMOLITION HAMMER. theyre brutal thrash (not death metal like many claim) epidemic of violence is the sickest metal album of all time

at the risk of sounding like some true metal asshole (metal's only a small portion of what I even listen to these days), I hate shroomery metal threads...

including metal-ish grind as well.

EDIT: hahaha oops I didn't see that you disliked guttural vocals guess my recommendations are worthless then, I'll keep em up anyway though...usually when people talk about being into "math metal" they like shit like meshuggah so I figured you didn't mind it being broooooootal

I'll put a few with less extreme (or sans) vocals at the top for ya though

and I'm not a fan of this band but you might like em alright if you can get over the stupid ass vocoder vocals, they keep the guttural death metal vox to a minimum and are really jazzy but those transformers sounding vocals just kill it for me personally:

and if you're specifically looking for technical/complex stuff heres some...I'm not into a lot of tech death or "math metal" so some of these bands I don't really listen to anymore but will fit what yer lookin for

lol necrophagist is wanky as fuck but i'll still include it:

If by wanky you meant extremely fucking talented at playing the guitar, then yes it is a bit wanky.

GWAR!!!

I'm not too much into the metal thing any more but gwar cuts right through any barrier I may have, them and Psychostick, who just came out with a new album yesterday that's fucking hilarious. Hung out with them at a Portland bar for awhile and they're pretty god damn funny/chill.
