Seriously guys... I used to love Metallica and Megadeth and Slayer. (if it's any indication - Master of Puppets was the first album I ever owned).. They were my gods. I grew up listening to that stuff, I can play just about every Metallica and Megadeth song on guitar and bass. I could play the shit backwards. Iron Maiden? Of fucking course. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Piece of Mind, Number of the Beast, and Powerslave were my favorites. After years of listening to every piece of metal I could get my hands on, Iced Earth's Night of the Stormrider blew my cultured ass away. Opeth and Dream Theater have to be my favorite bands ever - I've seen them both live 4 or 5 times, used to own every album, and Michael Akerfeldt and John Petrucci were my gods.
My metal CD collection was approaching 430 CDs by the time I lost it. I was freaking obsessed. So were most of my friends. We all mostly listened to different genres of metal, but we would make each other listen to something every time one of us would find a "new" band. Nowadays I'm pretty shocked if a decent metal band gets past my notice that I havent heard of. I started with "classic" metal and "thrash" and "heavy" metal like Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera, Sepultura.. moved on to more "progressive" metal like Dream Theater, Nevermore, Meshuggah, Cynic, Theory in Practice.. then "death" metal like Death, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Obituary.. on to more "black" metal like Burzum, Emperor, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir, Diabolical Masquerade, Mayhem, Immortal, etc, on to "obscure and technical" metal like Yngwie Malmsteen, Cacophony, Jason Becker, Symphony X, etc. I devoured anything I could find - no matter how unknown or obscure the band. I find that most bands have their pros and cons.. some are fun to listen to the first few times, then it gets old. Some create masterpeaces of metal (Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace, Number of the Beast, etc) that you can listen to over and over and over again and rock out to it like a madman.
Then you have Death.. who created Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, Spiritual Healing, Human, Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns, The Sound of Perserverance. They are two or three cuts above the rest in every category as far as I am concerned. Just my opinion though.

I've got their latest concert in Germany on DVD and it is awsome. Enjoy them more in concert than just audio.

Symbolic... by Death
There's a lot of metal albums that I will absolutely love, then get tired of after hearing five thousand times. But this one blows me away every time I listen to it.. even though I know every note, every tempo change, every word.. this is basically the template by which I judge all other metal.
If you don't know who Death was.. you should. They helped invent Death metal, but Death was unique.. jazz influenced and a technical proficiency unlike most. If I don't hear this album for six months or a year.. it's that much sweeter the next time I do. Yet I could listen to it everday and still jam out to it. I can't say enough good things about this album...I love it. Yes I love their other albums too.. but this one sticks out the most for me.
Best everything. Go download it and listen to it.
just gave it a listen
OMG you are SO right!
im becomming obsessed w/ this band...cant get enough

Panopticon by Isis. A truly beautiful album. Oh yeah, Death kicks arse, but I think that their final album (The Sound of Perseverance) was their best.
