Rating System v. Thread
#1488180 - 04/24/03 01:19 AM (20 years, 1 month ago) |
|
|
If it has been agreed that the implemented rating system is to be used for rating users for trades...why is the Good Trader Post still open...lock it!
I remember when my school said we had to switch to the metric system by 1995. For about six mo's they taught us how to convert and provided info in the metric system. Then they stopped. Most Americans are not using the metric system to this day...because change is often forced...especially when habits have been established.
So, I ask the Admin to lock the Good Traders Post in an effort to transition the Shroomery members to the better rating system...or get rid of the post in the Marketplace that explains that the members should be using the new system.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Marketplace&Number=1456347&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=93&fpart=1
Get with the show folks.

I will leave this up to the Marketplace mods to pass decision on the thread in question. However, if you've noticed we've lost all the info in the dynamic ratings. This is the second time this has happened and 3D nor myself have any idea why it's happening. Matts designed the rating system from what I can remember, and I will consult with him on the matter - but until them, I think that we may as well leave the Trader threads open since the dynamic ratings are still in the beta phase of development and as it currently stands, only feedback given after 4/20 was saved

Sounds reasonable. I hope it gets fixed soon.
It seems like it's been in the works for quite a while now.

Yes, until the system is stable I wouldn't want to close the thread.
I do suggest that users use both systems right now because the Good traders thread will be eventually closed. If users don't start using the rating system then they will basically be losing their current status.

I would hope that the feedback already in the thread could be transfered to the rating system. Perhaps a good transition plan should be thought of in order to maximize the transfer of ratings to the new system.

I just heard that the new rating system is available and reliable. A tally of the old system was just completed. This seems like a good transistion point to me.
What are you (admin/mods) waiting for?

Last time I chatted with matts he's busy with school right now, in the midst of finals he was saying.
He did say soon he'll be able to get on this though after his school is done.

I won't lock it. I like being able to see a list of names of people that are good traders.
I don't see why we should lock it.
What is your reason to have the Good Trader thread locked?

I?m also against simply locking it. But you should try to get people use the rating system(in addition to that thread).

No problems since the ratings drop on 4/20 weekend. Looks like your backup measures have been sucessful thus far. But, if memory serves, the old ratings didn't drop for many weeks and then all of the sudden disappeared, so we may still face rough seas ahead
But so far as I can tell, it's lookin' good

The only reason we can see a list is because a user was willing to compile the list, which he said took him several hours to do. If an automatic system is available, it seems like a waste not to use it.
Do you think there will really be a very big response to an optional change? Most people get stuck in habits.
I see a few people interested in a better rating system, here it is. Let's all take full advantage of it.
It seems like a waste to encourage the developement of a system and then to rely on an older less complete system instead.
I encourage the admin/mods to come up with a smooth transition to the new system now that it is available.

Yes, well the smooth transition is in progress...
The last time the data got wiped on the dynamic ratings system was after the 4/20 weekend. Thus far (after matts reset the backup rates), we have not had any problems. However, it had been many weeks working when the data was suddenly lost on the 4/20 weekend... so we will continue to encourage use of the system in addition to the Good/Bad trader threads until we are sure that the system is stable. After a reasonable amount of time, then I'm sure we will phase out the manual lists.

Good find Joshua... seems like special characters don't work with the dynamic ratings. Another example: ????p?F???d??
So what do you think matts?

Way to go!
BTW, the new system is slowly finding acceptance, today when I backuped the table there were 517 individual rates in it.

Try to click on a user name w/i the rating system.
For example:
Look at your own ratings, then try to click on the user name link for someone who has rated you.
Here's an example of what you might see if you did this.

I am very happy to see the new rating sytem working!
I do have some criticism though. If you look through ratings, you wil seel a huge proportion of ratings as fives. I think the current system of non-anonymous rates has skewed the accuracy of the system.
I suggest adding the option of making your rate anonymous. I believe this will make the rates people receive more accurate.
Not many people want to be known as the person who gave a 1 to someone, regardless of how deserved the 1 might have been.

Regardless of the ideal of honest ratings, the current system is not accurate.
At school we rate our teachers, anonymously. I think it is a fact that anonymous ratings are more honest ratings.
Before we had a range in value for the overall rates a user received. Now we have no range. If everyone is a four or a five, what is the sense in the rate?

I see your point. I do not agree that it is good.
When I lobby, I lobby for the whole...at least I think I do.
Thank you for your opinion.
Yes, I would be more inclined to give out bad rates when deserved if they were anonymous. As it is, if I rate a user low and he sees that, he will turn around and likely rate me low for no other reason than to get back at me.
Look at your rating of Boxtop and his subsequent rating of you. That is a perfect example.
In general, people who rate are very effected by the fact that the ratee is going to see their rate, this skews the honesty of the rating system IMO.
The rating system is more for unaquainted people to get an idea for the reliability of a user. As it stands most of us are reliable to the same degree, I don't think this is the actual case though.

The rest are a waste of space.

Agreed. Anyone who feels the need to spend their lives posting insults in ratings about complete strangers on the internet is clearly a very pitiful human being. I only post postive ratings unless one of the pitiful sort raise themselves onto their hind legs to post a rating "attacking" me

Most of that criticism came from people who thought I was too strict in S&P.
Be serious. No-one minded you being "strict". It was your childish and vindictive editing of posts by anyone you didn't like, petty vandettas and humourless, arrogant manner which eventually led people to complain about you en masse.
They hated me, so I left to please them.
No-one "hated" you. They simply considered you a very poor, offensive moderator and complained about you. As is their right. Instead of dismissing this as people "hating" you, be mature and consider it a learning experience.

My thoughts exactly.

As a moderatator you shoul take Papavers advice and not ignore people on the board. As he stated that mods need to be able to see all comments made by all people.

I can't remember the last time I even responded to a post "the member in question" made, never mind made the "multitude" of comments in your vivid imagination. I'd forgotten you even existed until you recently indulged your tireless obsession and posted a nasty rating about me. To which I replied in kind. I certainly wouldn't have felt rating you was even worth the effort.
If by "edited by the administration" you mean my friendly chat with papaver the situation was simple. I assumed after the torrent of complaints about your disgraceful abuse of the moderators position that you had been ejected from the S&P forum. I'm sorry if I misunderstood the situation but noting your reluctance to explain your departure I had to guess that you had been pushed rather than jumped. Now can you PLEASE use the ignore feature and never respond to me ever again. I will gladly extend you the same courtesy

Just a little addition here I stopped posting and even looking at the politics activisin & law forum cos my ratings went down to two and I luckily did not have to trade until the new system came into place and when it did I have only one trade rating by a respected member and as a result many people have traded with me. (and I await there favorable ratings). But my whole point is this is a mushroom site and to those people who actually care about there growing should tread lightly and use the site for what its for. There are many chat rooms and foums in which you can stir the shit out of people elsewhere (this is what I do). But I think as has been said above there are members who dont really care about growing and can afford to be out of control but they mainly lurk in OTD (soap opera of the shroomery) and Pol/act/law. And are easily avoided.
