What supplements actually work for building muscle mass?

I've tried ZMA, and it worked. It is supposed to increase testosterone.

I used it when I was in university, and definitely produced testosterone. I showered one day and felt a lump under my nipple. What happened is some of the testosterone was converting into estrogen (this happens in every man; T is a precursor of E) and was causing a small growth of breast tissue. Fortunately I caught it early, and it went away when I stopped taking it.

When I go on a cycle, I wake up every morning with a hardon (like when I was in my teens) and that is definitely not a placebo effect.

Don't take it unless you are over 20 and have low levels of testosterone in the first place.

Or better yet, don't use supps at all until you know how to put muscle mass on your body.

Supplements for building mass are IMO a waste of money.  I have no experience but from what I can tell in order to keep the mass on you have to continue lifting at the same level.  That would be hard once you stop taking the supplement.
I advise against any mass building supplements.  You will appreciate it more once you have it if you have to work harder for it.  That being said if you have been lifting for years and have hit your natural plateau and you are not satisfied with yourself then go for it.

All I use is a protein shake 1-3x a day. 25g of protein 2g of carbs in each one.  I'm by no means big but it keeps my energy levels up for work(which is very physically demanding) and does help me gain some muscle.  I also try to eat as many times a day as I can while staying away from junk food and fast food.

Honestly, since I started drinking the protein shakes, I've noticed my muscles get quite a bit bigger and not shrink over night.  I haven't weighed myself in like a year but I'm willing to bet I'm the heaviest I ever have been, which is saying something.  It's harder for me to gain weight than it is for someone with a thyroid disorder to lose it.

Also, your daily dose of vitamins may not gain you muscle mass but they will keep you feeling good enough to go the extra distance every day.  I take a daily dose of B12(100iu), C(2000+mg) and D(400iu).  Had a multi vitamin but I can't find the kind I used to have and the one I bought to replace it(One A Day)upset my stomach.

Obviously this is a very basic list, but it's a good place to start if you aren't taking anything at all.  I'm sure other people will have a lot better info for you though.

Spirulina and banana smoothie before exercise is a real help. I can run much further on it. Also flax seed, and various other seeds have a ton of protein. Salmon, Various fish, Beef steak, etc. all good.

I currently drink 4-5 EAS or Muscle Milk protein shakes a day, along with a nitric oxide enhancer before workout.

It's definitely working, I just want to optimize my gains as much as possible. I'm thinking about getting some creatine today and trying that.

I think you should def give spirulina and banana smoothie a go, if you have the cash to test out this kind of thing. Spirulina has a very definite and obvious energizing effect IMO.

Today I picked up some creatine and a multi-vitamin to acompany my NO booster. I will try them out tomorrow and report back on any noticeable differences in my workout.

ROFTL... If you've never taken any pre-workout supplement... I can say without a doubt that there will be noticeable differences...

I have been taking an NO booster for awhile now. I notice getting 1-2 extra reps on all of my exercises. If I could get another 2 or so I would be pumped.

Oh I don't really make em for the taste but I put a banana or two in about a teaspoon or two of spirulina, a tablespoon of (or two); maca root, honey, flax seed, pumpkin seed and sunflower seed. Then just any extra fruit, you''l find certain things that help the taste for you if you experiment just whack in whatever you've got around the house strawberries are good. Makes about slighlty less than a pint, you down it and the same amount in water then go. Banana also helps to stop cramping.

Eat egg whites. They work perfectly and have no chemical additives such as colorings in them in contrast to store bought protein powders.

Why are chemical additives a bad thing?
