Jacques Vallee's "Confrontations"

Vallee is oft-regarded as a relatively unbiased supporter of UFOlogy; a rationalist scientist turned quasi-believer.

In his classic book "Confrontations" he lists his best evidence.

In the Chapter: "Botanical Data", he tells the story of a Ms. Kirk who sees a strange cloud. "Suddenly it started raining, and a forty-foot tree nearby bent as if whipped by some tremendous force..." (This is too easy a target for my infamous sarcasm - insert your own comment here.) Then in a case in Vasensole, France, a Msr. Jose Masse saw two obejcts land in his field. "Shortly thereafter, the leaves of two trees yellowed rapidly." This was October folks. It is called frost and happens every single autumn! In another incident, "He was driving his tractor, when the engine died suddenly... He became aware of sort of whirlwind or atmospheric vortex to his right." Here in the desert, we call them dust devils and are NOT caused by alien visitation, but by temperature variance. "When I (Vallee) asked about the [tractor's] batteries, Jose told me that one of them was found completely dry a few days after the incident." I will try that excuse next time I need to call AAA for roadside assistance due to my lack of proper automotive maintenance.

In the Chapter: "Clinical Data", Vallee starts off with the case of Dr. X; a French physician. Sorry, but I immediately disregard anonymous cases. Does that mean they are not true nor reliable? No, it means they are unverifiable and are coming to me third-hand.

And so on...another yawner.

Even many hard-core UFO enthusiasts have a negative opinion of him.
I certainly don't think anyone can hold him out as a widely accepted expert in these circles. Crop circles perhaps.

i'm sure the experiences that the said people in his book had were more unique than he was able to portray them...which isn't his fault, because like you said, he didn't experience them, he just forwarded the story to the masses through his book.

much like the psychedelic experience, in that words fall short of really "putting people in your shoes".

the only way to understand certain experiences is to understand them personally, through your own set of senses and brain activity.

maybe he just thought the stories were really cool, and wanted to say, "hey man, don't you think this is cool too?" :cool:
