I've been reading more about chemical pasteurization
    #1476580 - 04/20/03 03:59 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I was reading some teks (visions tek, I believe) on spawning straw which had been pasteurized using a mild bleach (I think 1 tsp per gallon).

How about soaking or spraying your straw with a 1% peroxide solution? This would kill contaminate spores, no? Would this kill too many beneficial bacteria to ward off further fungal attacks if you sealed up your straw in a bag after you treated it?

Here we go; from http://www.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/5/19912.html?1042027891

Quote:

Your casing material should also be pasteurized in bleach water (1/4 tsp bleach per Gal. water). Once soaked, squeeze out excess water and put 1 1/2"-2" casing on top of the basket of straw and spawn layers.

Correction; 1/4 tsp NaCLO/gal h2o.

Notice, though, that the tek is not clear on whether or not the solution was heated; could be read either way. Also, the casing material is what is being treated.

I'm not very fond of bleach, really. I prefer peroxide. So, what do you guys think? A 24 hour spray and soak with 1% peroxide, followed by introduction of grain spawn to (1:10) the straw, then sealed in a plastic bag or other container to colonize?

Any input is welcome

Okay, forget peroxide. A 1:200 NaCLO/H2O solution is what people have been using to dunk. If its strong enough to kill trich, its strong enough for me.

Also, if someone has mentioned this I apologize, but there is a section in GGMM called 'bleach bath method'. For pasteurizing bulk subs. Stamets warns about dumping the wash, and that this treatment should only be considered for terminal [fruiting sub] transfers. [if I remember right]

Can anyone elaborate on this method? I have yet to receive my book

I've been having better luck lately with lime than with bleach. If you can swing the ph of the substrate or casing to 10 or so, they mycelium will still colonize it, but the contams don't have a chance. Bleach and H2O2 will both slow down they mycelium. I think peroxide is better reserved just for cobweb mold, and bleach is great for bombing the air before sterile work by using a 1:10 mixture with water. I hope this helps.

mushroom magic uses peroxide to treat straw and ive read of others doing it.

straw has a catalitic enzyme that speeds h2o2 decomp

we get our best results combining hot water [straight from tap with hot water heater cranked up to max] with BOTH lime AND bleach.
the triple whammy is remarkably effective with both visions' baskets and rodger's logs.
