Pasteurize or Sterilize (cow dung)?
    #485117 - 12/09/01 02:21 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Should I pasteurize or sterilize my cow dung. If pasteurizing is the best, then are there any links that I can go and read up on the procedure, or can someone spell it out for me. Please help!

Thanx

You can put your dung in a pillow case and tie the pillow case, put that in near boiling water for 45 minutes, hang it outside and let it drip dry. The dung should be moist, but not dripping wet or anything. I've gotta pasteurize some dung myself for some Pan Trops I'm growing, this is the first time I've used dung.

I've noticed that Una at MushMush sterilizes theirs (for Pan species) without apparent problems.

I've never understood why sterilzing would give more contam problems over pasteurization, and could only come up with one reason, that pasturizing leeches unwanted nutrients and sterilzing does not (meaning that it isn't sterilizing per se that is the source of the problem.)

Pasteurization doesnt kill the benfecial bactria in compost and dung, while sterilization does. So if you fuck up the sterile work after you sterilize, youll more likely get contams then you would if you pasteurize.
I always prefer sterilization though. Pasteurization also works just fine btw.

Sterile = Inert, no living microorganism.
Pasteurized = allmost sterile, living microorganisms resistent to this procedure.

Now, heat can't choose good or bad microorganisms to kill, that's why sterilization is practically fool proof, the problem is that mushrooms also benefit from some microorganisms they find in a pasteurized substrat but they don't NEED them to grow. Pasteurized substrats are used on casings because the mycelium is strong enough to fight any existing contam and take advantage of still living microorganisms.

Peace,
