peroxidated spawn?
    #1349135 - 03/04/03 09:00 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Anyone familliar with rush waynes techniques, what do you think about this to be used as a no-pc peroxidated spawn?

http://www.petco.com/product_info.asp?familyid=9571&sku=8774822879&tab=2&dept_id=648&c1=642&c2=643&c3=648&ct1=Litter+%26+Litter+Accessories&ct2=Litter&ct3=Litter+Type+%2D+Natural+%26+Biodegradable

or even as a substrate, or pressure cooked spawn, for that matter.

well, it's a litter supplement. So it's probably something similar to pelletized wheat straw - but perhaps it carries the grain in it too? or would that be too inviting to molds and such in the litter box, because of the sugars?

it sounds like someone found a use for wheat chaff.
they say it's safe for kittens and declawed cats, so it is probably at least steam pasteurized .
do you know what the texture of that stuff is like ?
will it hold it's shape when saturated ?
i'm thinking, it might take some tweaking to get it to work, water content, airation ect . may have to add some verm to it .
give it a try .

working with wood pellet fuel and pelletized paper right now, it's definantly next on my list though.

What species have you had luck with, using this is a substrate? any edibles? or only psilocybes?

I am deciding if i want to do Lions Mane, Nameko, an oyster specie, or s. rugosoannulata - I think all should work well for it, but maybe oysters would be better suited for straw?

i'm also growing some shiitake spawn, to inoculate logs come spring .

Wheat storage & processing plants create a lot of wheat dust, chaff & whatever else hits the floor. More than likely, this litter is just that. Any whole grain or seed should be PC'ed. Otherwise, the contam rate will be higher than if not PC'ed.

Fractal sterilization is not all that effective with grains. Those little endospores in grains are tough SOB's. Moreover a soak & boil cycle can create mush, that clumps like cement. Peroxide will not kill all endospores in grains, either, IMHO.

I tried fractal sterilization of grains, several times. Contam rate was around 50%. Which is unacceptable to me.

running a little OT but adding to 6T's comments. the best succes i have had with WBS involved a 24-36 hour soak in warm/hot with a drain and rinse with warm/hot water every 12 hours. this allows endospores to germinate, be rinsed away, then germinate again before being PC'd. i have experienced about a 20% decrease in overall contamination (putting me at about 1.2%) with this method as opposed to a straight 24 hour soak. i believe (rightly so) that using warm/hot water for the soaks and rinses encourages endospore germination.

I just meant do you think this would carry peroxidaise carrying enzymes, so that peroxide would be broken down upon contact, rather than allowing pseudo-pasteurization.

what's wrong with coniferous wood? Mine doesn't say what type of wood it is, but seems to be working fine with oysters, stropharia rugosoannulata, shiitake, and nameko

I bought myself 20kg of this stuff today, just for fun:)
On rehyration the pellets fall to bits and take on an appearance that is very similar to horseshit.
It looks very promising, getting me quite excited in fact:D
The thing I don't like about whole straw is that it's hard to get the spawn mixed through evenly, and the layers of spawn/straw/spawn etc method sometimes takes too long to if spawn is scarce.
it looks like this stuff would be a lot easier to get spawn evenly distributed, and it's so much easier to squeeze the excess water out of too, by the handful.
let's hope I'm not disappointed, as I'm going to use my last jar of Jalisco grasseed to spawn some tonight:)
