Questions About Using Honey For Mushroom Preservation

I have heard several times that fresh mushrooms could be immersed in honey as an alternative to drying. I have heard that, using this method, mushrooms will be preserved by the honey for an unlimited time. Also, I've heard that any chemicals in the mushrooms will eventually disperse throughout the honey, which can then be drained off and eaten seperately.

Questions:

Has anyone tried this method of preservation? Does it work as I have described? If not, what are the differences? If so, would you recommend it as a method of drying which is more stealthy than regular dessicant drying techniques?

Corollary questions: How long must the mushrooms be immersed in the honey before the chemicals from the mushrooms have completely dispersed throughout the honey? Is it a good idea to agitate the jars in order to mix the mixture within them? Will heating the honey to ~90 degrees fahrenhet in order to make it more fluid and thus more amenable to chemical dispersion destroy the chemicals in the mushrooms?

My attempts to preserve fresh mushrooms in honey resulted in rotten mushrooms, a layer of blue stained water, and a really foul smell!

ive heard of this method, but be aware contamination may infect your mush-honey jars ruining the whole lot.

yes the honey will contain leeched psilocybin/psilocin.

i would not recommend this method as an alternative to drying, because of contam. issues, and my beliefs are that not only will potency be lost to transfers from the mush to the honey, but the water left in the fruitbody will add to potency loss over time. And this method isnt nearly as stealthy as say:

dry fruitbodies/cake with commercial dessicants(snap crackle dry!) then blend up the dried mushroom crackers in a coffee grinder or something to get the substance to as fine as possible. after throughly grinded, use methanol tek to extract goodies. buy some empty phramacy style gel caps(pills) you can get them at health food stores, and fill them up, be sure to way your doses! these can be placed into any inconspicuous medicine bottles(something to match the type of gelcaps u have would be great). viola, keep the bottles of pills in a not too hot place and you wont experience any exorbant potency losses!


its a good idea to agitate the jars, to remove as much air pockets as possible.

Hello this is my first time posting let me see if I can do this right. My friend's monkey preserves mushrooms in honey all the time. Monkey says honey preservation is not an alternative to drying. The mushrooms must be dried completely before they can be preserved in honey. Otherwise you will wind up with something very nasty.  Peace :smile:~

yeh someone tried this a while back, opened a small jar and they were great at about 4 months old... but at 9 months they opened a bigger jar which stank like booze... the water from the shrooms leached out into the honey, making it runny and causing it to ferment. a quantity of these fermented shrooms were eaten by a volunteer who experienced almost no hallucinogenic effects, with no detriment to her health.
