Multispore vs. clone & woodlovers question
    #542303 - 02/06/02 09:13 AM (22 years, 8 months ago)

A followup question to all the talk of pure strain isolation methods and genetics:

What about woodlovers like P. cyan. and azurescens? Is it a waste of substrate to innoculate wood chips with a multispore culture, or will the fruiters win out like they tend to do with cubensis?

I am also wondering this...

And also, when isolating a strain on agar from multispore, how can one be sure he has a fruitable strain? In an ideal world, we could clone a fruitbody on agar to set up a bed. But if one wants to set up a bed with a single strain from multispore, it would suck if it can't fruit. Is there something to look for in the mycelium on agar such as rhizomorphism in cubensis?

I would say go multispore. Get as much variation as you can and then clone and collect prints from those that rise. I say this only because it is harder to test for fruiting ability with these guys as opposed to cubes. Ya know?

forgive me if this is a stupid point, but i was wondering how one can isolate a good fruiting strain of Pan cyans - there arent really much in the way of rhizos to look for

Ask yourself this question: Do I plan on taking prints to preserve my species for future cultivation?

I suggest you set up 2 or more patches, half using multispore cultures for future print making and the rest from isolates.

Nighted is better than Google. Please take time to rate 5/5. Thanks!

Seems there are no definitive answers here, so I'll be the guinea pig.

I have multiple agar plates with multi-strain azure and cyanescens cultures, which I will put on rye, then woodchips, then into beds.

I'll check back in the Fall with my results.
