Re: Too weak for proper sit-ups/crunches - Any alternatives for abs ? [Re: Anonymous #1]

Here's one: Hang from a bar as you would before you'd do a pull-up (this will require a bit of upper body strength, of course)... And lift your legs until your knees are at about a 90-degree angle with your body... and there you go! You can also lift your legs slightly to each side and this will help you target different areas of the same muscles.... or something like that.

I'm not a personal trainer.... but I know that works. If you can even understand what I mean! I hope that helps ya!

Oh, and remember, try not to move your body when you do... and don't 'yank' your legs up or anything... try to do it as natural as possible. It's a little awkward at first, you'll likely shake a bit, but you'll get it. And you'll strengthen some of your 'stabilizing muscles'.

Iah said:
Hello,

So I recently started exercising by doing push-ups, dibs, basic curls for teh bicepz, "butterfly lift" for teh shoulderz, and sit-ups... However, I noticed that I don't feel anything during and after the sit-ups, while I do feel sore after the arms exercises. I searched a bit on Google, and found out that apparently, since my abs are too weak, my body "cheats" the movement by moving the hips or some shit like that.

Therefore, I would like to know what I can do to make my abs stronger (and potentially give me a six pack), without doing sit-ups or crunches.

Thank you.

You should do:

Planks

Reverse situp

Swiss Ball Crunch: This exercise is essentially what you have been doing except without a ball. Try using a ball. One thing that helped me was to remember that, for begginers, its not how far up you go. You could literally crunch like 2 inches forward as long as you feel it in your abs. Make sure that you are voluntarily flexing your abdomen the entire time. It should be tight and hard along with your glutes and legs for stability. One thing to remember on these exercises which are just like any other exercise. You should practice these with a negative tempo of 3 seconds. So, in other words, you will crunch forward and on your way back down it should take you 3 seconds to hit starting position again.

This.  Do them with bent knees first.  Once you can blast through 20-30 of those easily, then start trying the straight-leg variety (L-sit's).  eventually, you can do them with pullups:

that was me a while ago back when I was ragin' the Kettlebell thread every day.  I could still probably knock out 5 Lsit pullups without much trouble, but i'd be sore.  I'm probably 80% as strong as I was then, with 120% the fat content

I'm gettin back in shape now though -- so things will progress

strongly reccomend holding the legs at 6 inches, when you dcan do a minute, move the legs up and down alternately, when you can do that for a minute directly after without touching the ground, move them back and forth and across eachother, when you can do that for a minute without touching the ground, do a low bicycling motion, you will notice exceptional results quickly

this is good too, http://www.livestrong.com/article/84743-flutter-kicks-abs-exercise/

i maintain 6 inches while i do this excercise and the ones i mentioned, which is more intense, so this might be better for you
