Blew up a food dehydrator
    #1468676 -

My buddy was trying to modify his food dehydrator so that the fan would spin but it wouldn't heat up. After a lot of trial and error he finally succeeded in completely blowing the motor up. So he's got a unit with all the trays, fan, and plastic enclosure, but he needs a new system to drive the fan.

Does anyone know of a place on the Internet you could get something like that?

Get the manufacture's name and do a search on google for them. Then contact them with the model number and the part needed.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

It doesn't sound like your an electrician. Find the black wire that exits fromt the heating element. Cut it and then cover with e-tape. If you are up to it you could install a variable resistor which would allow you to vary the heat coming from the heating element.

As far as a replacement goes...contact the manufacturer.

Good luck!

Hi Joshua,
Is this true with all heating elements? I mean can you just cut and cover the black wire in all dehydrators/heating units? This will stop the heat but not the fan right?

Thanks,
Lana

nope that would not be true if the fan and heating element were on the same circut but i would Imagine not, if they were then when turning the heat down would also slow the fan, in conclusion you would prob be ok.

Lana,

All dehydrators with a heating element have to have a power source wire feeding juice to it. Simply unscrew the base of it, to expose that heating element coil & as Joshua said, clip that wire & tape over (to shunt it off) -- then put the unit back togather. Simple as that.

You can also install (splice in) a toggle switch. So you can apply heat, by flipping the switch. Unit above has a reostat already installed, with which you can adjust heat from around 80 to 145 F.

It is also easy & cheap to build a hinged door box dryer out of thin plywood (about the size of a two drawer file cabinet). Simply make wood frame slide in shelves & line the bottom of them with aluminum screen door screen.

Install any small SQC fan on the top of the box & drill a few vent holes along the box base. If you want to add a tiny bit of heat, install a screw in light bulb fixture in the box top & wire it to the fan. Then screw in a 100 (or whatever) watt bulb in the fixture, so the fan blows past it.

Like a mini walnut dryer, if ya know what that is?

6T

Yeah I really think the heat and fan spin were on the same circuit. I tried disconnecting and then reconnecting all kinds of connections and I either got nothing, normal heat and spin speed, or super-duper heat and spin speed. I eventually bypassed something and made a new connection and kablooe.

Here's some photos of what I've got.

Here's everything now that it's all screwed up.

Here's the motor that drives the fan. The little knob fits into a hole in the fan.

Here's the fan. You can see where the knob of the motor fits into the fan.

Here's half of how the entire fanning contraption fits together.

Here's how the whole contraption fits together.

So does anyone have any idea how I can get some spinnage here?

many flee markets/surplus stores sell eletric motors for cheap, just take the one you have with you or copy down the stats and go grab a new one if it is the motor which is blown, pretty simple steup so it must be. good luck.
